1. Cite the main functions of the integumentary system.
» Protection
» Regulating body temperature
» Producing defensive proteins
» Sensation
» Excretion
» Synthesizing vitamin D
2. Identify the glands of the skin responsible for cooling of the body; glands involved in
producing body odor.
Eccrine glands are responsible for producing sweat which is the natural cooling system of
the body. They are located all over the body. Apocrine glands, however, are located in the
armpits and genitals, where they produce secretions that are odorless unless acted upon by
bacteria.
3. List the types of sensations with appropriate names of receptors detected in the skin.
» Hair follicles - detect light touch
» Meissner corpuscles - indentation and slipping objects
» Pacinian corpuscles - detect vibration
» Merkel cells - detect structure and texture
» Rufinni corpuscles - detect stretch
» C-fibers - detect heat and pain
4. What changes occur in the skin as a result of aging?
Subcutaneous tissue decreases which makes older people more sensitive to colder
temperature, drier skin, and an increased vulnerability to bruises and skin injuries. The
loss of elasticity in the skin will also result in eye bags, and wrinkles.
5. Give three short examples of how skin functions as a diagnostic aid.
1. Bruising of the skin could be a result of blunt force trauma or internal bleeding.
2. Sweaty palms or back could be a result of fear, embarrassment or psychological
distress.
3. Blue or cyanotic skin could be a result of poor blood circulation.
