Assignment 6

This document provides examples and problems related to the normal distribution, normal approximation to the binomial distribution, and sampling distributions. Some key points covered include: - Calculating the standard deviation of a normal distribution given the mean and bounds that are equidistant from the mean. - Finding probabilities related to normal distributions, such as the probability of an observation falling within a certain range. - Approximating binomial distributions with a normal distribution and using this to find probabilities. - Descriptions and calculations involving sampling distributions, including finding the mean and standard deviation of the distribution of sample means.

MA2177 Exercise 6 – Ch.

6 Normal Distribution, Normal Approximation to Binomial

and Sampling Distribution

Normal distribution
1. It is estimated that 80% of all 18-year-old women have weights ranging from 103.5 to
144.5lb. Assuming the weight distribution can be adequately modeled by a normal curve and
assuming that 103.5 and 144.5 are equidistant from the average weight µ , calculate σ .

2. A shipment of steel bars will be accepted if the mean breaking strength of a random sample
of 10 steel bars is greater than 250 pounds per square inch. In the past, the breaking strength
of such bars has had a mean of 235 and a variance of 400. Assume that the breaking
strengths are normally distributed.
(i) What is the probability that one randomly selected steel bar will have a breaking
strength in the range from 245 to 255?
(ii)# What is the probability that the shipment will be accepted?

3. A teacher decides that the top 10% of students should receive A’s and the next 25% B’s. If
the test scores are normally distributed with the mean of 70 and the standard deviation of 10,
find the scores that should be assigned A’s and B’s.

4. A machine produces components whose lengths are normally distributed with mean
10.00mm and standard deviation 0.06mm. A component is acceptable if its length lies
between 9.89mm and 10.10mm.
(i) Determine the probability that a component is acceptable.
*
(ii) Four components are picked up randomly, what is the probability that at least two of
them are acceptable?

(iii) If 500 components are to be produced by the machine, what is the probability of
having at least 450 acceptable components?

Normal approximation to binomial seems to use z table 2

5. Suppose x is a binomial random variable with n = 50 and p = 0.6. A normal distribution is
used to approximate this binomial distribution.
(i) Find the mean µ and the standard deviation σ .
(ii) Find P (20 ≤ x ≤ 35) .

6. The probability of winning on a slot machine is 5%. If a person plays the machine 500 times,
find the probability of winning exactly 30 times.

7. A political candidate estimates that 30% of the voters in his party favor his proposed tax
reform bill. If there are 400 people at a rally, find the probability that at least 100 favor his
tax bill.

8. It is known that 4% of bottles produced in a plant are deflective. A box of bottles will pass
the quality test if less than 5% of the bottles inside are deflective. What is the probability
that a box of 1,000 bottles will pass the quality test?

Sampling distribution of sample means

9. The heights of 2,000 male factory workers have a mean of 172 cm and a standard deviation
of 7.5 cm. If 40 samples each containing 30 workers are taken, determine the mean and
standard deviation of the sampling distribution for sample means if the sampling is done
with replacement.

10. A manufacturer of automobile batteries claims that the distribution of the lengths of life of
its best batteries has a mean of 60 months and a standard deviation of 7 months. Suppose a
consumer group decides to check the claim by purchasing a sample of 50 of these batteries
and subjecting them to tests that determine their lives.
(i) Assuming that the manufacturer’s claim is true, describe the sampling distribution of
the mean lifetime of a sample of 50 batteries.
(ii) Assuming that the manufacturer’s claim is true, what is the probability that the
consumer group’s sample has a mean life of 57.5 or fewer months?
