Introduction
The implementation of genetic engineering had open up our minds in its numerous offer
of benefits to improve human life. It covers wide range of field like medicine (for the treatment of
diseases) addressing environmental issues (less use of pesticide in crops) and lastly is the
creation of high quality food products.
Bioethics is a study of ethical issues brought about by advances in biology and
medicine. It includes the answer of what is right and wrong in the new discoveries and
techniques in biology, such as genetic engineering and the transplantation of organs.

Objectives:
1. classify the situation given as a benefit or risk in using GMO
2. express ones perception in the use of GMO

we have them under circumstances all the reasons of PRO and CON are not
present to the mind at the same time”,

Activity 2 Benefit and Risk of GMO
Put a smile face if the statement given is a benefit while sad face
if a risk from the use of genetically modified organism.
________1. Crops like potato, tomato, soybean and rice are currently being genetically
engineered to obtain new strains with better nutritional qualities and increased
yield.
________2. Genetic engineering in food can be used to produce totally the same or identical
substances such as proteins and other food nutrients.
________3. Positive genetic engineering deals with enhancing the positive traits in an individual
like increasing longevity or human capacity while negative genetic engineering
deals with the suppression of negative traits in human beings like certain genetic
diseases.
________4. Genetic engineering in food involves the contamination of genes in crops.
________5. While increasing the immunity to diseases in plants, the resistance genes may get
transferred to the harmful pathogens.
________6. Genetic engineering can hamper the diversity in organisms.
________7. The genetic modification of foods can be used to increase their medicinal value,
thus making edible vaccines available.
D. Elaborate
Activity 3 Bioethics
Below are some of the arguments about the use of transgenic organism. For your
own perspective, how would you explain or answer the questions?
1. Is creating or altering genes of an organism a form of Blasphemy to the creator
(God)? Why?
2. Is Genetic engineering morally permissible or not?
E. Evaluate
Write True if the statement is correct and False if incorrect.
_________1. Bioethics is ethical implication and application of biotechnology.
_________2. Genetic engineering in medicine involves the contamination of genes in
products yield.
_________3. In genetic engineering crops are manipulated to obtain new strains with
better nutritional qualities and increased yield.
_________4. The genetic modification of foods can be used to increase their
medicinal value, thus making edible vaccines available.
_________5. Positive genetic engineering deals with enhancing the positive traits in
an individual like increasing longevity or human capacity.

Reflection
Genetic engineering may work wonders but it is after all a process of manipulating the
natural. It is altering something that is not originally created by man. Is playing with nature really
safe?

1. Altering something which is not originally made by man is a serious task, but I guess if its
goal is to improve human life like cure of diseases or to prevent the occurrence of disorders
before birth, this will be very beneficial to us human. However, if the methods exceed in the
moral values and issues of human this will ignite fire of controversy against people who are not
pro of biotechnology.
