Functions of Communication

There are five functions of communication. These are regulation or control, social interaction, motivation,
information, and emotional expression.

1. Regulation / Control – Communication functions to control behavior. It can be used to regulate the nature and
number of activities people engage in.

P1: “Your room is a mess. Clean it now, or else you'll get grounded”.

P2:” Yes, mom/dad”.

2. Social Interaction – Communication allows people to interact with others to develop bonds or intimacy. It
also allows individuals to express desires, encouragement, needs, and decision or to give and get information.

P1: “Hey (name)! It's been a long time”.

P2: “Oh hey, yeah, you are right. Are you free right now? How about we catch up and have coffee?”

P1: “Sure!”
 

3. Motivation – Communication persuades or encourages another person to change his/her opinion, attitude, and
behavior. 

P1: “Hey (NAME), I heard from Nikki about your excellent performance at the cooking show today”.

P2: “Oh really? Thank you!”

P1: “Congratulations and keep up the good work!” 8

4. Emotional Expression – Communication facilitates people’s expression of their feelings such as love, fear,
anger, joy, hope, or any other emotion.

P1: “Hey (name), I thought you would like this, so I bought it for you”. 9

P2: “Wow! Thank you so much! I really appreciate it”. 10

P1: “I'm happy that you liked it”. 11

5. Information – Communication functions to convey information. It can be used in giving and getting
information.
P1: “Excuse me! Could you help me find the way to the city hall?”

P2: “Oh, sure. It's this way. Go straight ahead at the traffic lights. Turn left. Go along the street until you pass the
park and keep going straight until you see the sign for the museum”.

P1: “Great! Thanks for your help”.

P2: “You're welcome!”
