What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes in the performance of Dressmaking tasks. The
scope of this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The
language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are
arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course.

The module is divided into two lessons, namely:


● Lesson 1 – Principles of Design
● Lesson 2– Create a simple project applying principles of design

After going through this module, you are expected to:


1. identify principle of design;
2. apply principle of design in planning a project;
3. create a simple hand stitch project; and
4. observe safety measures in creating a simple project.

Lesson 1 Principles of Design
Designing a dress, gown, or a complete outfit is not an easy task. It involves art
and creativity. There are also standards that we need to follow to create clothing that is
pleasing to the eyes and functional. In this lesson, the principles of design will be
discussed that can be used to create a simple project.

What’s In

In the previous lesson, you have learned to take accurate body measurements as
well as converting metric to standard number system. Those learnings are important to
create an actual project. Aside from taking body measurements, which is the most
important step in creating a project, designing a project is also done prior to making an
actual dress, gown, or any dressmaking project. Planning a design requires basic
knowledge on art and principles of design. When a principle of design is applied to a
dressmaking project, you can create a beautiful yet functional piece of garment.

Notes to the Teacher


In this lesson, the learners are expected to apply principles of
design in planning a simple project. Students will sketch a design of
a simple project before creating the actual project.

What is It
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
The principles of designs are concepts used to organize or arrange the structural
elements of design. These are the ways in which it affects the expressive content, or the
message of the work.

Principles of Design

BALANCE – To achieve balance, a garment


or ensemble should have equal visual weight
throughout the design.
Two type of balance:
1. Symmetrically or the formal balance - can
be described as having equal "weight" on
equal sides of a centrally placed like a see
saw. This is an easy way of balancing, but
such balance lends monotony to the design.

2. Asymmetrically or the informal balance –


Informal balance occurs when an object SYMMETRICAL ASYMMETRICAL
appears unequal by repetition in an
arrangement of elements of design.

3. Radial Balance – all points of the lines
meet at the center.

PROPORTION - is the pleasing relationship


of all parts of the object with one another.
Proportion refers to the relative size and
scale of the various elements in a design. The
issue is the relationship between objects, or
parts, of a whole.

EMPHASIS – every pleasing design has one


part that is more interesting than any other.
This is the emphasis or the center of interest.

RHYTHM – these are smooth movement


repeated. Rhythm is an important principle
of art. It is created by repeated use of the
design. If there is rhythm in a design, the eye
would move easily from one part to the other.

HARMONY - means a relationship of


different portion of a design. Harmony
should be achieved through pleasing use
of color, shape, and texture to give a
feeling of oneness.

Online Learners:

On a clean paper sketch a complete outfit you want to create in the future if
you will become a dressmaker or a tailor. You can search online for inspiration. Color
your work! Take a picture of your work and upload online.

Materials Needed:

1. Clean white paper (bond paper, Oslo paper)

4. Phone camera

Create a Simple Project


Lesson 2
Applying Principles of Design

A simple project can be done at home and does not require machines or other
electric equipment. In this lesson, you will learn how to create a simple project and hand
stitch it by yourself with the guidance of your teacher or parents. But before you start
stitching there are things you need to learn first.

What’s In

In the previous lesson, you learn about principles of design that can be applied
to a dressmaking project. It is very important to plan first before creating a project
whether it is a simple or a complicated. Sketching a project can be very helpful to see
the expected output of a project. After translating your ideas into sketch, you are now
ready to stitch!

What is It
BASIC HAND STITCHES
Sewing the basic hand stitches are very easy if you learn each step thoroughly
before you start practicing the next step. Sewing by hand is a skill that most, if not all,
people should probably attempt to master at some point.

BACK STITCH
Make one running stitch, then take a back
stitch to the beginning of the first stitch,
thus overlapping each running stitch.
Resembles machine stitching and is used to
strengthen a seam made by hand.

BASTING
Basting is quite important in successful
sewing. This is used to hold fabric
temporarily in place, until permanently
stitched. There are four types of basting;
hand basting, machine basting, pin basting
and basting edges with an iron.

RUNNING STITCH
To make this stitch, push point of needle in
and out of fabric until you have several
stitches on the needle. Hold fabric taut with
left hand, pull the needle through. Practice
until you make fine even stitches.

OUTLINE STITCH
This stitch is like the back stitch, but it is
slanted. Make one
slanted backstitch in front of another letting
each one overlap the
one before it just a little bit, until the design
is filled.

BLANKET STITCH
Put your needle in 1/4 inch from the edge of
the fabric, put the thread under the point of
the needle and pull through.

CATCH STITCH
This is used for a flat finish next to fabric,
such as seam binding on a hem. Hold open
hem edge away from you, work from left to
right. Take a stitch in the hem, then a tiny
stitch to the right just beyond edge of hem
with the point of needle to the left. This
makes diagonal lined that cross each other.

CHAIN STITCH
Insert the needle in and out of the fabric (as
in the running stitch). Bring the thread
under the tip of the needle while still in the
fabric, then pull the needle through.

Make a draft pattern of a face mask on a scratch card board paper or an old
folder. Trace the pattern below:

Additional Activities

Offline Learners:
On a clean white paper make a collage of pictures that promotes safety routines that
can help protect yourself and your family from COVID-19 infection. You can use
actual photo of yourself wearing the mask you have created and make a collage of
your pictures.

Online Learners:
Create a short video on how we can protect ourselves from COVID-19 Infection using
personal protective equipment including the facemask you have created. The video
should not be less than 2 minutes. Upload the video you created online.
