1.0 INTRODUCTION
‘The client’ herein known as Mahadi Energy Limited owns a parcel of land along Port Reitz Road
in Mombasa. The area consists of an open paved area (with two gates along Port Reitz Road), a
security building and an administrative office block and warehouse storage areas on different
areas of the property.
The client would like to put up a LPG storage depot within this property.
It is with this indication that ‘the client’ asked me, Eng. Dr. Joseph Nzioki Kuta, herein known as
‘the geotechnical consultant’, to carry out a preliminary geotechnical survey to assess the state
of the soil and submit a report on the same.

The client in its quest for obtaining geotechnical survey report from the geotechnical consultant
has clearly spelt out the task to include but not be limited to the following:

1. Neither the whole nor part of this investigative report or any reference thereto may be
included in any published document, circular nor statement published in any way
without the written approval of Eng. Dr. Joseph Nzioki Kuta as to the form and context
in which it may appear.
2. This investigative report has been prepared for Mahadi Energy Limited and for no other
person is accept to this report.
3. We have assumed that the land, structure and improvements are fit for the purpose for
which they are being used and comply with all statutory and local by-laws and regulations
and the business will continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future and
that there is no intention nor necessity to liquidate or curtail significantly the scale of
operation.
4. I confirm that I, Eng. Dr. Joseph Nzioki Kuta, do not have a conflict of interest in
undertaking this work.

The site is located along Port Reitz Road in Jomvu Constituency. The size according to the deed
plan is 2.681 hectares. There are two gates with one being used currently as entrance and exit.
There is a security house adjacent to the main gate. There is a security barrier just after the main
gate. The open are is paved using precast paving blocks.
There is a drainage channel running across the open area. There is a security lighting mast in the
middle of the open area. There is a masonry boundary wall with an electric fence over it.
At the end of the south of the plot is the end of the paved area and there is a slightly steep slope
down to an area with natural greenery till the end where there is a boundary wall with an electric
fence over it.
It is at this area where the trial pits were dug to minimize damage to the paved area.
Excavation commenced on Friday 15th May 2020 and were completed on Saturday 23rd May 2020
with soil samples taken to the laboratory on the same day.
Tests commenced on Tuesday 26th May 202 and were completed on Saturday 30th May 2020.
All the laboratory tests were conducted at Geoff Griffiths Laboratories under my close
supervision.
Below is a satellite image with descriptions of the site.

TRIAL PIT
PIT A
B
The abandoned trial pit due to huge chunks of concrete debris and huge roots
5.1.2 Trial Pit One (Successful)
The first successful trial pit reached a maximum depth of 5.5 meters.
The top of trial pit A was approximately 200 millimeters above the top finish level of the paved
surface.
Two samples were collected from the pit at depths of 4.5 meters and 5.5 meters. The samples
were collected in 10kg bags and stored in a shed to enable remain in its current state for as
long as possible prior to testing.
The profile of the pit was fairly consistent with mostly red soil encountered.
GEOTECHNICAL SURVEY REPORT FOR THE PROPOSED LPG STORAGE FOR MAHADI ENERGY LTD
No insitu tests were carried out for samples collected from this pit and no ground water was
encountered while excavating this pit.
After collection of the samples, the trial pit was backfilled with spoils from excavation and
made level at the surface to a similar condition as that prior to the work.
Photo on left shows excavation by casual laborer and photo on right shows excavation spoils.
The profile was well defined with the layers measuring approximately one meter each.
No insitu tests were carried out for samples collected from this pit and no ground water was
encountered while excavating this pit.

After collection of the samples, the trial pit was backfilled with spoils from excavation and
made level at the surface to a similar condition as that prior to the work.
Red clay like soil encountered within the first two meters of excavation.
Grey shale like soil (extreme left) encountered at a depth of five meters of excavation.

The following laboratory tests were performed on samples collected at the Site either in
general accordance with BS 5930:1999 +A2:2010 Code of practice for site investigations;
Sieve/particle analysis and Soil classification: This test is used to evaluate the
distribution of soil grain sizes, which constitute the soil fabric and is used in soil
classification and assessment of soil engineering behavior.
Atterberg Limits: This is a basic measure of the critical water content of fine-grained
soils.
Direct Shear Test: The tests were performed on an undisturbed sandy soil sample in
order to obtain the soil shear strength values, which are among the basic soil
parameters that are used to estimate soil bearing capacity and lateral earth pressures.
Maximum Dry Density and Optimum Moisture Content: The compaction curve
defines the relationship between water content and dry unit weight of soils
compacted soils effort. The maximum dry density and optimum water content are
used to determine the relative density of existing soils and to determine the level
of compaction during grading activities.

Position – Design/Site Engineer
This was a church building belonging the Kenya Assemblies of God fellowship.
The construction consisted of masonry with concrete column. The roof initial structure
was to be of any line section. On the week that we were supposed to have started the roof,
the sponsor changed his mind and decided that it should be timber roof, so I had to start
change the design. The timber roof for such span is not simple, so 1st had to suggest the
pattern of the roof.
I settled on “W” pattern, then came up with size proportional and hence designed. Apart
from this there was a problem of time, the change of mind of the sponsors interfered with
the program of the whole project and so even the roofing work had to be done in a hurry.
Project Engineer
The main task was to obtain complete soil bearing capacity and settlement, and the
requirement from the client was as follows:
1. Soil Borings.
2. Load Test (report).
3. Soil sampling data reports.
4. Laboratory testing analysis and reports
So we broke the tasks as follows: -
1. Detailed ground survey to establish location and elevation of the ground at each
exploratory hole.
2. Dig one Test Pits at each tank location and at the office block.
3. Carry out geophysical survey to locate buried services (power cables, water pipes,
old foundations etc).
4. Core drilling usually at each tank site to a depth of 1.5B where B is the tank
diameter. However due to the coral reef we shall limit max. of 10m.
5. Laboratory tests on soil and rock samples to determine design parameters and
establish bearing capacity for each tank.
Detailed Activities
Field Work
Survey work to establish the location and elevation of the ground at each exploratory hole
Geophysical survey to locate buried service lines (power cables, water pipes etc)
Mobilization and demobilization, of drilling rig, including transportation of all required
tools, test equipment and personnel.
Transportation of soil and rock samples to the testing laboratories
Digging Test pits in cohesive soil to a maximum depth of 3m including cost of cutting
block samples from walls and base of pits, collection of bulk samples and backfilling.
Setting up at the site of each borehole and shifting drilling equipment from one borehole
to the next.
Drilling through overburden including SPT and U100 sampling at every 1.5m interval.
Maximum of 3m per borehole
Core Drilling through rock below overburden including rock sampling up to 10m depth
LABORATORY TESTS
Complete set of classification tests on selected representative soil samples
Shear box tests on selected representative soil samples
Unconfined compressive tests on selected rock core samples
Consolidated undrained triaxial compression tests on selected soil samples
One dimensional Consolidation test on clay samples
REPORTS
Factual report giving details of methods and tests used; all the data collected, including
core photographs and borehole logs
Geotechnical report incorporating geological analysis of the site and recommendations on
bearing capacity
Kalolen Giriama Society for sustainable development
The main task was to determine the soil profile and underground water table, sutability
and capacity to suppler the community:
1. Soil Borings.
2. Soil sampling data reports.
4. Laboratory testing analysis and reports
Tasks formed as follows: -
1. Detailed ground survey to establish location of the highest water table and
capacity
2. Carry out geophysical survey to locate buried services (power cables, water pipes,
old foundations etc).
3. Laboratory tests on soil and rock samples to determine responsible water
contamination.

Career Summary
I am a civil & structural engineering design engineer specializing in Civil & Structural Engineering
designs, Project Management and construction with an ideological vision is to merge old design
concepts with the emerging trends of the modern design office requirements.
I began my career in 2009 working in sites as a labourer and later joined joined the university to
study my certificates and later my Higher Diploma in building and civil engineering.
Upon completion, I later rejoined university to pursue my Bachelor of Science in Civil engineering
on part time basis while working full time.
I am well equipped in the technical capacity and experience to integrate and interprete national
and international design procedures to suit the needs of the environment. I therefore offer
systems, which are compatible with the socio-economic environment of the country.
I have attained the relevant academic qualififcations and work experience necessary to undertake
any type of project present in the wide field of engineering, architecture, project management and
construction.
I am also well conversant and trained in ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems and helped
the firm that I worked for to be certified. This training has enabled me to produce work of high
quality and value customer satisfaction in everything that I do on a project.
Being a projects coordinator of a mid sized engineering consultancy firm with 15 engineers has
enabled me to horn my public speaking and communication skills, help with conflict resolution in
the work place and sharpened my engineering knowledge due to the engineers-forum meetings
that I helped to initiate to share design and general engineering and project problems that are
faced on a day to day basis on site.
