GEOTECHNICAL SURVEY REPORT FOR THE PROPOSED LPG STORAGE FOR MAHADI ENERGY LTD

1.0 INTRODUCTION

‘The client’ herein known as Mahadi Energy Limited owns a parcel of land along Port Reitz Road
in Mombasa. The area consists of an open paved area (with two gates along Port Reitz Road), a
security building and an administrative office block and warehouse storage areas on different
areas of the property.

The client would like to put up a LPG storage depot within this property.

It is with this indication that ‘the client’ asked me, Eng. Dr. Joseph Nzioki Kuta, herein known as
‘the geotechnical consultant’, to carry out a preliminary geotechnical survey to assess the state
of the soil and submit a report on the same.

4.0 SITE DESRIPTION

The site is located along Port Reitz Road in Jomvu Constituency. The size according to the deed
plan is 2.681 hectares. There are two gates with one being used currently as entrance and exit.
There is a security house adjacent to the main gate. There is a security barrier just after the main
gate. The open are is paved using precast paving blocks.
There is a drainage channel running across the open area. There is a security lighting mast in the
middle of the open area. There is a masonry boundary wall with an electric fence over it.
At the end of the south of the plot is the end of the paved area and there is a slightly steep slope
down to an area with natural greenery till the end where there is a boundary wall with an electric
fence over it.
It is at this area where the trial pits were dug to minimize damage to the paved area.
Excavation commenced on Friday 15th May 2020 and were completed on Saturday 23rd May 2020

5.0 SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATIONS

Several trial pit positions were considered but for the purposes of the report I settled on two
trial pits. One was selected to be as close as possible to the paved area and one was selected to
be as low as possible form the paved area. This was done so as to attempt and get as diverse
samples as possible.
The pits were excavated by our technical staff using hand tools with the spoils placed adjacent
to the pits. The trenches were approximately 2 meters long by one meter wide.
5.1 Trial Pit analysis

5.1.1 Trial Pit One (Abandoned)

The first trial pit position was dug but abandoned upon reaching a depth of 3 meters because of
encountering big blocks of concrete (presumably used as fill material when constructing the
open yard) and big roots from nearby trees.

The abandoned trial pit due to huge chunks of concrete debris and huge roots
5.1.2 Trial Pit One (Successful)
The first successful trial pit reached a maximum depth of 5.5 meters.
The top of trial pit A was approximately 200 millimeters above the top finish level of the paved
surface.
Two samples were collected from the pit at depths of 4.5 meters and 5.5 meters. The samples
were collected in 10kg bags and stored in a shed to enable remain in its current state for as
long as possible prior to testing.

The profile of the pit was fairly consistent with mostly red soil encountered.

GEOTECHNICAL SURVEY REPORT FOR THE PROPOSED LPG STORAGE FOR MAHADI ENERGY LTD

No insitu tests were carried out for samples collected from this pit and no ground water was
encountered while excavating this pit.

After collection of the samples, the trial pit was backfilled with spoils from excavation and
made level at the surface to a similar condition as that prior to the work.

Photo on left shows excavation by casual laborer and photo on right shows excavation spoils.

5.1.3 Trial Pit Two (Successful)

The second successful trial pit reached a maximum depth of 5 meters.
The top of trial pit A was approximately 2.5 meters below the top finish level of the paved
surface.
Two samples were collected from the pit at depths of 4 meters and 5 meters. The samples
were collected in 10kg bags and stored in a shed to enable remain in its current state for as
long as possible prior to testing.

The profile of the pit was consisted four soil types

 Red clay like soil.

 Brown murram like soil.
 White murram like soil.
 Grey shale like soil.

The profile was well defined with the layers measuring approximately one meter each.

No insitu tests were carried out for samples collected from this pit and no ground water was
encountered while excavating this pit.

After collection of the samples, the trial pit was backfilled with spoils from excavation and
made level at the surface to a similar condition as that prior to the work.

Red clay like soil encountered within the first two meters of excavation.

Brown murram like soil encountered at a depth of three meters of excavation.

5.2 Laboratory Testing
After the site visual inspection, we proceeded to collect soil samples so as to carry out soil
analysis and design a gabion with the resulting data and finally compare our results and
whatever is existing on site.

The following laboratory tests were performed on samples collected at the Site either in
general accordance with BS 5930:1999 +A2:2010 Code of practice for site investigations;

 Sieve/particle analysis and Soil classification: This test is used to evaluate the
distribution of soil grain sizes, which constitute the soil fabric and is used in soil
classification and assessment of soil engineering behavior.
 Atterberg Limits: This is a basic measure of the critical water content of fine-grained
soils.
 Direct Shear Test: The tests were performed on an undisturbed sandy soil sample in
order to obtain the soil shear strength values, which are among the basic soil
parameters that are used to estimate soil bearing capacity and lateral earth pressures.
 Maximum Dry Density and Optimum Moisture Content: The compaction curve
defines the relationship between water content and dry unit weight of soils
compacted soils effort. The maximum dry density and optimum water content are
used to determine the relative density of existing soils and to determine the level
of compaction during grading activities.

6.0 CONCLUSION

From the analysis of the laboratory results, it is evident that;

i. Samples from trial pit A, (whose top is almost level with top of paved floor finish) gives
higher bearing capacity values.
ii. Samples from trial pit A have generally lower Atterberg limit values.
iii. Samples from trial pit A have lower moisture content values.
iv. Samples from trial pit A have maximum dry density values
v. Samples from trial pit A have higher values of angle of shearing resistance.
vi. Generally, the shallower samples closest to top of open area have better geotechnical
properties.
vii. The differences in the bearing capacities in both trial pits are not far apart and hence the
difference in the geotechnical properties are not huge.

KAG Church at Kisauni
Position – Design/Site Engineer
This was a church building belonging the Kenya Assemblies of God fellowship.
The construction consisted of masonry with concrete column. The roof initial structure
was to be of any line section. On the week that we were supposed to have started the roof,
the sponsor changed his mind and decided that it should be timber roof, so I had to start
change the design. The timber roof for such span is not simple, so 1st had to suggest the
pattern of the roof.
I settled on “W” pattern, then came up with size proportional and hence designed. Apart
from this there was a problem of time, the change of mind of the sponsors interfered with
the program of the whole project and so even the roofing work had to be done in a hurry.

Mikindani Complex Flats)

Position – Design?Site Engineer
In the Mikindani flats, there were no problems with design except that the ground were
marshy and swampy. The construction also took place during rainy season {April-march
2000}. The contractor had to dewater the excavation continuously before every casting,
so I instructed the contractor to increase the thickness of the blinding slab and add water
proof cement. This worked and also we had to use had to use sulphate-resisting cement to
overcome the situation. This was aggravated by the fact that the foundation had to go
dipper than the normal (01.6m) and the deeper trench cement reach the local water label.
A detailed ground water profile had to be done to the under laying water conditions

Villa Complex at Ngomongo – Shanzu

Position – Design?Project Manager
This belongs to an individual near the renowned Ngomongo Villages Recreation Centre.
This project was well designed. The design presented not problem. The soil bearing was
good so much that if not for the build code, the foundation can be put on the surface. The
rock was hard but the Eng. S. K. Mutisya insisted that the minimum foundation depth
was to be attained. (0.9m). one of the problems that the contractor had content with was
that of the termites. Even after using the prescribed drug. The contractor had to look for
the termite control company to comp the area. This and the excavation greatly costed the
contractor. This made me learn about the unforeseen costs and that rocky soil is good for
engineering purposes but costly to the contractor. So had to adjust the provisional sum.

Jesus Celebration Centre (JCC), Design and construction

Position- Desgn/Project Manager
This is one the largest church hall in Mombasa and may be even in the whole Country.
The construction of the whole church was given to one of the Big construction company-
Civicon Ltd.
The dome design came to me as a shock to me since I thought the main contractor was to
do everything this Thirty Seater Sanctuary.
The Dome was an eight sided structure with an external radius of 12.5 metres; roofed
with glassfibre membrane. This carved structure took us weeks to come up with the
solution.
I started with the main structure. I made a proto type dome which on passing the test we
finalized the design and construction. Use of steel Angle lines in N pattern trusses was
adopted.
After fabrication, the task was now to mount it on a compression ring and eventually lift
onto the top of structure of the main hall.
However with help of technicians from Super Manufacturer we made a breakthrough by
making a prototype and after testing we finalized the design and fabrication. The task
now was to lift the dome to the compression ring.
The main contractor cranes were unable to lift the fibre glass part of the dome but I
adopted 1/3 rule. With this rule, we prepared tugs at 1/3 of the dome’s height (center of
mass) and with that, it was lifted on to the compression ring.
Another problem was the wind. From the oceanography prediction, it was therefore
advocated to lift the dome only between 6A.M and 11A.M in the morning.

Hotel complex of four floor Executive room at Mtwapa

Here I was taken as Project Engineer. The structural Engineer was Eng. Maina Kiambigi.
The first design was changed and it meant that the structure design had to change also.
The Engineer directed that soil test be carried out. After the test, the foundation design
was completely change. He introduced a combined system of the pad. This was different
from the first which was an isolated column pads. So I learned in such areas like Mtwapa,
where the soil properties are highly varied, it is good to carry out soil test.

Community Health Promotion Kenya Ltd (CHPK) of PO Box 1045 80109

Mbomani-Mtwapa- Design Engineer
This is a Clinic Health Centre. It comprises office and tuition single story block, two
dormitories, maternity ward, general ward and study sheds.
The design and construction commencement was early 2010. I was not the initial
engineer until a problem occurred. In the main block is built on a sloping ground. Since
the long side was aligned downward, the height was so great that the initial Engineer
instructed to fill starting from 1.2m on the upper hill to 2.7m downhill. Everything went
on well until it started raining before they had started casting the ground floor slab.
When the rain started (April-May) the pore pressure was so high that the walls and the
columns downstream failed. This caused the management of the organization to call me
and requested that I be the Site Engineer (July 2010). So I determined that the soil be
removed and instead have a basement can ground on the lover site. I had to redesign the
underground slab at the point to a suspended slab and made the room below a library and
computer room. This operation saved them the space and excessive bracing to retain the
faulty column and walls. Also from 2017 a Conference complex started until now ( May
2020)

(a) Civil Sites

Likon – Lungalunga Rd. 100Km Resealing
Site Engineer
In this project I was to supervise the pothole sealing, repair broken road shoulders and
culverts. The main challenge was the traffic and that of compaction. As for the traffic, the
best time for operation and doing the patches was at night. However the police of the
Tanzanian boarder’s main road advised against the operation due to privacy. So we had
to have lights, cones and sometimes the traffic police.
The other problem was the consolidation, particularly the narrow and deep potholes. So I
had to improvise the usage of hardwood timber pellets. The pellets were put in those
potholes then the vibrator passed over them. The other problem was that of the local
people. They demanded that their “children” should be the one to do work. I solved this
by calling a meeting with the area counselors and headmen. They gave me some young to
the manual labour and some women to some light jobs such as cleaning.

(E)Geo – Technical and Water works
