Geotechnical Engineering (Final Exam)

Name:__________________________________________________ Yr./Sec:_____________

TEST I (1-25)

Following are the results of field unit weight determination test performed by means by means of the sand cone
method, Determine the dry density of compaction in the field.

a. Calibrated dry density of Otawa sand = 1738 kg/m 3

b. Mass of Otawa sand to fill the cone = 0.118 kg
c. Mass of jar + cone + sand (before use) = 6.08 kg
d. Mass of jar + cone + sand (after use) = 2.86 kg
e. Mass of moist soil from hole = 3.34 kg
f. Moisture content of moist soil = 12.1%

TEST II (26-50)

From the given data below find the coefficient of uniformity and coefficient of curvature

TEST III (51-75)

The results of a Standard Compaction test are shown in the table:

Moisture content (%) 6.2 8.1 9.8 11.5 12.5 13.2

unit weight (kN/m) 16.9 18.7 17.8 18.4 18.2 17.8

Determine the maximum dry unit weight and optimum moisture content

TEST IV. (76-100)

In a falling head permeability test the length and area of cross section of soil specimen are 0.17 m and 21.8 X 10 -4 m2
respectively. Calculate the time required for head drop from 0.25 m to 0.10 m, the area of cross sectional of stand pipe
is 2 X 10-4 m2 the sample has three layers with permeability 3 x 10 -5 m/s for second 0.06 m thickness and 6 x 10 -5 m/s and
for the third 0.50 thickness, Assume the floe is taking place perpindicular to the bending plane.
