Assignment 2

This document contains an assignment with multiple questions regarding process dynamics and control models. Question 1 involves developing a dynamic model for an irreversible chemical reaction in a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR). Question 2 involves modeling a system of two connected tanks and performing a degree of freedom analysis. Question 3 involves modeling the response of a thermometer placed in a temperature bath that is increasing linearly over time. Question 4 involves modeling the response of a stirred-tank blending system to an impulse input change and determining initial compositions. Question 5 involves determining the temperature reading of a thermometer immersed in a heated bath after a given time.

Assignment-2

Q. No 1: Consider a simple liquid-phase, irreversible chemical reaction A → B is carried out in

a stirred-tank reactor (CSTR). Assume that the rate of reaction is first order with respect
to component A, 𝒓 = 𝒌𝑪𝑨 where r is the rate of reaction of A per unit volume, k is the
reaction rate constant and CA is the molar concentration of species A. The rate
constant is typically a function of temperature given by the Arrhenius relation, 𝒌 =
𝑬
𝒌𝟎 𝒆(−𝑹𝑻) where k0 is the frequency factor, E is the activation energy, and R is the gas
constant. The schematic diagram of the CSTR is shown in figure.

(a) Develop a dynamic model for this process.

(b) Make a degree of freedom analysis for your model – identifying all parameters, outputs,
and inputs that must be known functions of time in order to obtain a solution.

Q. No. 2: Two tanks are connected together in the following way in Fig.

(a) Develop a model for this system that can be used to find h1, h2, q1, q2 as functions of time
for any given variations in inputs.
(b) Perform a degree of freedom analysis. Identify all input and output variables.
Q. No. 3: A thermometer having a time constant of 0.2 min is placed in a temperature bath, and
after the thermometer comes to equilibrium with the bath, the temperature of the bath is
increased linearly with time at a rate of 1 °/min. Find the difference between the indicated
temperature and the bath temperature.
(a) 0.1 min after the change in temperature begins.
(b) 5 min after the change in temperature begin.
(c) What is the maximum deviation between indicated temperature and bath temperature,
and when does it occur?
(d) Plot the forcing function and response on the same graph. After a long enough time, by
how many minutes does the response lag the input?

Q. No. 4: A stirred-tank blending system can be described by a first order transfer function
between the exit composition x and the inlet composition x1 as:
𝑿(𝒔) 𝟎.𝟔
= 𝟏𝟎𝒔+𝟏 time constant unit: minute
𝑿𝟏 (𝒔)

When the blending system is at steady state (𝑥̅ = 0.3), the dynamic behavior is tested
by quickly adding a large amount of a radioactive tracer, thus approximating an impulse
function with magnitude1.5.
(a) Calculate the exit composition response x(t) using Laplace transform and sketch
x(t). Based on this analytical expression, what is the value of x(0)?
(b) Using the initial value theorem, determine the value of x(0).
(c) If the process is initially at a steady state with (𝑥̅ = 0.3), what is the value of x(0)?

Q. No. 4: A thermometer having a time constant of 1 min is initially at 50 °C. It is immersed in a

bath maintained at 100 °C at t=0. Determine the temperature reading at t=1.2 min.
