Vision 
Music is offered to all students in year 7 and 9 at Eastlea Community School. Through this creative subject students are able to unlock their 
imagination, intellect, empathy and confidence. Students ideas, responses and feelings are expressed, communicated and valued, 
providing them with the skills to question and challenge. The curriculum across music is rich, exciting, varied and fully inclusive. We aim to 
develop a wide range of skills to help support students to be successful across the Arts and in their lives as a whole.  
 
Teaching and Learning 
There are three main Music strands – Understanding, Composing and Performing Music.  
 
Understanding Music and Music Appraisal: S ​ tudents demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of musical elements, contexts 
and language through an extensive study of different musical styles such as: Classical, Pop, World Music, African Music, Latin Music and 
more. 
 
Composing and Performing Music:​ Students develop their understanding of performance and composition through exploration of their 
own instrument within styles and genres of their choosing. 
They demonstrate their playing skills and abilities by practising and performing a piece musically, accurately and with appropriate 
interpretation. In the composition element of this component, they demonstrate knowledge of composition techniques, use of musical 
elements and resources, including specific instrumental and technology techniques. 
 
Skills will include:  
● To be able to play and perform confidently in a range of solo and ensemble contexts using their voice, playing instruments 
musically, fluently and with accuracy and expression.  
● To be able to improvise and compose; and extend and develop musical ideas by drawing on a range of musical structures, styles, 
genres and traditions.  
● To use staff and other relevant notations appropriately and accurately in a range of musical styles, genres and traditions.  
● To be able to identify and use the inter-related dimensions of music expressively and with increasing sophistication, including use of 
tonalities, different types of scales and other musical devices.  
● To listen with increasing discrimination to a wide range of music from great composers and musicians. 
● To develop a deepening understanding of the music that they perform and to which they listen, and its history.
