C. Lesson Proper
“Our lesson for today is all about Repeat Marks. So firstly, lets
identify it first.”
“The repeat marks are the signs or marks that we can see in a music
score. These repeat marks have a different use and different purposes.
By the use of repeat marks, you can see on what part of the song you
will repeat, they also used repeat marks so that the lyrics can’t be written
redundantly in a music. And the conductor will easily determine on
which part of the music they will repeat. To have a deeper
understanding, let’s discuss the different repeat marks.”
“We have a different Repeat Mark for forms, these are following; D.C
or Da Capo, Al Fine, D.C. Al Fine, D.S. or Dal Segno, Repeat
Symbol, and Repeat Sign.”
“And in the Da Capo they are always together with the Al Fine (can
also called Fine), once you see the D.C. then you will definitely see the
Al Fine also. The Al Fine means end or stop here.”
“Alright, Geimenel”

(I already mentioned a while ago that DC and Fine (or Al Fine) are
always together. For our example we have here the Twinkle, Twinkle
Little Star. Usually it is 3 phrases, but it can be also written like this,
with the DC Al Fine here and Al Fine there. For you to understand the
DC Al Fine, let me sing the Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. ('Twinkle,
Twinkle Little Star how I wonder what you are' "you can see here that
there are the repeat marks called Fine, so you can't stop right here" let
me continue, 'Up above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky.'
"You can see here that there is also a repeat mark called D.C. Al Fine
so you will start again on the beginning of the song". 'Twinkle, Twinkle
Little Star, how I wonder what you are'. "Will you continue on the
next phrase? Of course not, you already see the repeat sign "Fine" so
you will stop right there)
“None, Teacher”
“Let’s proceed to the next, Jefferson read the next repeat mark”
“Dal Segno means (from the sign) D.S. means to go back to the Dal
Segno sign and repeat the section.”
“Yes, Teacher”
“Let’s proceed to the next, Annie read the next repeat mark”
“Annie: A repeat symbol is a
sign that indicates a section
should be repeated.”
If the piece has one repeat sign in the end or in the end of the section
the performer must repeat the entire piece or the section from the
beginning.

In this example, a performer should play to the repeat sign, then turn to
the beginning, then continue on.
“Yes, Teacher”
“Let’s proceed to the last one, Alenah read the next repeat mark”
“If the piece has only one repeat sign, then that means to return to the
beginning of the music and repeat (either continuing on past the repeat
or stopping, if the sign appears at the end of the music). Sometimes a

bar with a repeat sign will be numbered above (usually 1) and then
followed by another numbered bar (2).”
“In the repeat sign, we have here what we called close bracket and
open bracket. So, this is the clue when you will repeat and sometimes
it also has a repeat dot. It means you will go back to the beginning.
And then you will proceed to the open bracket means to go on or
continue singing.”
