Three Semester Review: Media, Self, and Society

Three semesters into the University of Maryland, I can definitely say that I have grown

academically. From my first semester to my second, I definitely stepped up my work quality and

as a result, my grades improved. A lot of that had to do with finally getting used to learning at

home instead of in a classroom. That being said, I didn’t really find the whole virtual learning

aspect of my freshman year to be ideal, as even though I did improve, it was definitely not the

easiest to stay focused, especially during lectures that lasted more than an hour.

Starting college online had one major consequence: it became very difficult to make new

friends. I did not have too many friends from my high school who went to UMD, so there wasn’t

really a way to connect with the people who were on campus. The one way I really got to meet

people was through my Media Scholars colloquium classes. Starting off, I was pretty quiet, I did

my assignments and my quizzes, but I didn’t really participate in discussions too much. Starting

around the middle of my first semester, we were starting to do more group projects, and through

those, I made a good amount of friends in the program! Over the second semester, I talked to

them a bit and also worked with them on group assignments. Finally, in the third semester (which

is when we had our first in-person class), I was able to meet them and hang out outside of class.

Through my time in Scholars, the part that influenced me the most was the eye openers

Allison showed us at the beginning of every class. For the last year and a half, she started off

class with a 90 second clip that highlighted big stories that the media thought reflected our

world, and then we would have a discussion about that clip. Even on days when we don’t have

class, I use these now to keep up with what’s going on in the world without having to dive too

deep into articles.

Media plays a very important role in my life, especially through content created by the

masses rather than corporations. It was very important for me to learn about the upsides and

drawbacks to these forms of media, I really learned to understand and analyze the information

that I take in. I use the skills I learned from Media Scholars daily, be it reading an article or

watching a video online. In a similar way, I think that the media has a large impact on the way

society as a whole views certain topics; corporations and individuals alike have the power to

shape the world’s views.

Media, Self, and Society focuses a lot on journalism and the way it plays a role in

everyone’s life, as well as the morals and ethics behind the practice. As a computer science

major, I have already learned a lot about the ethics of certain social media platforms and their

algorithms, such as Instagram and Facebook. This ties into much of the analysis we do in Media

Scholars, as in both fields I learned about the consequences of these practices. Through many of

the guest speakers and panels during my time in Media Scholars, I am also considering taking

more journalism classes at the University of Maryland.
