Honor before Honors

Dear Williams School Families,

What an amazing concert last night. The instrumentation and harmonious resonance filled Maury’s auditorium
for over an hour with the glorious sounds of our fourth through eighth grade bands. Karen Jackson did an
incredible job of preparing the students to perform for the nearly-filled house. Our kindergarten through third
graders also had their special role in singing a few tunes with the bands and ending the concert with our school
song. It’s always so nice to sit back and embrace the good feelings and soul filling power that music and
performance music can have in our lives. I had a seat with Meg way toward the back and couldn’t help but
beam throughout the entire performance. I know I left last night with a spring in my step and a few songs in my
heart.

As we were driving home, we talked about the concert but my son pointed out that he thought it was, in his
words, “weird” that over the past week or so he had played for the school lacrosse team, participated in the
regional forensics competition, played for his club lacrosse team, played his trombone in band, played a nice
role in the school’s musical, participated in seeing two of our TWS students get awards for the Elie Wiesel
Writing competition at this year’s Yom HaShoah Holocaust Remembrance Day service on Sunday night (Aidan
received first place, and Jack’s sister, Maddie, received a third place prize), and continued doing all of his
school work all the while.

I looked at Meg and smiled. He made a pretty insightful comment about all the opportunities he continues to be
presented with and of which he can take advantage. I glanced at Meg and we both smiled. We were proud of
our kids and savored about five short seconds of parental gloating in silence when my daughter slapped us back
into reality for the other back seat. “Yea, but just about every other kid does the same thing or more at our
school, so it’s no big deal, Jack.”

“True enough,” Jack said without skipping a beat.

And we all continued down Hampton in silence for a bit. The pause then lent its way to funny stories about the
day. Later, after the kids were in bed, Meg looked at me and smiled. “I am thankful that we are able to give
this wonderful gift to our children--a real liberal arts life.”

There are many opportunities that life affords you if you take advantage of them. At The Williams School I
have been proud and honored to help be part of giving to students and their families the gift of a liberal arts life.
Have a safe weekend. See you Monday.

Fondly,

Jay

Leroy T. Canoles, Jr. was a former Williams School Board of Trustees member, grandfather of two Williams
School students, father of our current Assistant Librarian, Jody Benedict, and enthusiastic supporter of our
annual golf tournament. He was truly respected and loved by all at The Williams School. A sage counselor
with an engaging wit, when Buddy Canoles talked, everyone listened. An exceptionally talented and well-
rounded individual, he played golf regularly and read volumes daily, especially non-fiction. Described as “a
man who saw both the forest and the trees,” he combined sportsmanship and intellectualism with vigor and
finesse. Ever a gentleman, we are honored to name our tournament in his memory

The Williams School Steps Up
Parents, students, faculty, alumni, and members of our Williams School family stepped up for the 2nd annual Step Up For
The Up Center stair climb. Organized by TWS parents Wendy Auerbach, Andria McClellan, and Dia DuVernet,
participation was enthusiastic and significant from The Williams School. Pictured is one group of non-competitive
climbers which included, from left to right, Meredith Lauter, Mary Alice Needham, Mary McCaffrey, Connor, Liza
Needham, Bennett, Beth Miller, Shawn Etter, Cindy Etter, and Julianne Casey. Winners in the competitive climbs
included a second for Sebastian in the 25 floor male 12 and under and in the 50 floor climb male 12 and under, a second
place for Lachlan. In the 100 floor category (4 times up Dominion Tower), female 12 and under, a second for Cameron
and for the category male 12 and under, first and second respectively for Aidan and James.

Thank you, Williams School, for stepping up to the plate and supporting this worthwhile project! We hope to have more
of you join us next year.
