ConDor Electronic Controller Petrosani edition

Operating Manual
1. General Description
- The ConDor controller enables automatic control of Hydraulic and Electric valves.
- The ConDor controller is a specialized PLC unit, that is easily programmed by
a non-professional operator: The system “asks” the user for the operating
instruction in plain English, so no prior knowledge of PLC programming is
required.
- The controller was built as a logic system, which is not limited to specific
control functions such as pressure, flow, time, etc., but may control any measurable
parameter ( salinity, radiation, temperature, electric potential, etc.)
- The system functions on “Real time”, providing extremely accurate control.
The valve control is carried out by Electric 12V-DC pulses, sent by the controller to
standard solenoid valves assembled on the valve bonnet, or to electric relays that
activate an electric motor, when controlling a motor-activated butterfly valve.
- Remote modification of the parameter set-point and remote data reading, make the
“ConDor” an end unit of central network controllers (SCADA systems).
- The standard “ConDor” Version 2.0 controls one valve.
- The “ConDor” Version 2M controls two valves simultaneously, and was
especially developed to control mixing junctions.

3. Configuration of the Controlled Valve :

- Standard valve should be equipped
with two 2/2, 12V-DC Electric a b
solenoid valves. One located at the
External control media
upstream and the other downstream (optional)
of the connection to the control
chamber (see drawing).
- The characteristics of the solenoids
are determined by the definition of Isolating
valve
the “Normal” valve position, e.g. In-line,
Isolating
the position it should enter when self-flusing
valve
filter
no electric command is given.
“Normal” Position is defined in the
Distributor programming level (see
Page 14)
- For most applications the Normal State is “ KEEP”, meaning the valve should
remain in its present position until an electric command is applied. Both solenoids,
in this case, should be Normally Closed
- If the selected normal valve position is “CLOSED”, then Solenoid [a] should be
Normally Open.
- If the selected normal valve position is “OPEN”, then Solenoid [b] should be
Normally Open.
- Activation media is taken, mostly, from the pipeline itself. The media should be
filtered to prevent solenoid clogging.
- An external control media, such as fresh water or compressed air, can be used if the
pipeline media can not be used (due to high contents of impurities, corrosive
properties, low pressure values, etc.).
4. System Configuration- version 2.0 (one valve control)
Refer to pages 43-45 for valve configurations of version 2M (Mixing junctions).

Programming
1.General
The ConDor controller is programmed in 3 levels.
- The factory defines the general function and capabilities of the unit.
- The distributor / constructor should define the technical details of used sensors,
local measurement units, programming modules that should be used and the ones that
are not needed. A defined code must be keyed-in to facilitate the programming of this
level.
- The user should execute the programming steps that are needed for his specific case.
Only these will appear on the screen, to facilitate simple, convenient operation.
- Specific conditions of valve / network relations may require the tuning of control
sensitivity. This can be executed on any level by entering a code, preventing
accidental modification of the sensitivity parameters will not be done by mistakenly
pressing a key.

2. Entering Data:
2.1 LCD Display of 2 rows, 40 characters in a row, shows the various parameters
and data in alternating screens. The user moves between the screens and
enters
the data using the buttons, as described below.

2.2 Five Control buttons are used for data insertion and for control of the valve
operation:

ENTER

Left Down Enter Up Right

2.2.1 Right / Left buttons:
- Moves the display to the next screen
- Moves the cursor to next digit when inserting numeric data

2.2.2 Up / Down buttons:

- Alter operating modes (start, stop, keep position etc.)
- Increase / Decrease numeric data
- Move between paths in each programming level

2.2.3 ENTER button

- Opens parameters for data insertion
- Enters the modified data to the operating memory of the controller.

2.2.4 All buttons are used for entering the codes that enable
- Distributor programming level
- Sensitivity adjustment.

Electric Connections
The external devices, required to the ConDor, should be connected to the connections panel
located under a cover, at the bottom of the front panel. Unscrew the two bolts of the cover in
order to reach the connection panel.
All input connections should use Shielded cords. The shield will be connected to ground at
the sensor side, not to the ConDor terminal (GND)
High voltage mains (220 or 110VAC) are not connected to this panel.
Below is a drawing of the connections panel, marking the location of the various inputs,
outputs and power supply.
The ConDor controller selects, automatically, the connections that should be used for each
control application. The selected connections are displayed in the Distributor level
programming path (see page 15).

Digital (Discrete) input devices are Dry- Contact units such as Pressostat, Pulse-
transmitting water meter, toggle switch etc., Up to 6 logic inputs can be used.
Do not connect electric potential from any source to the digital input connections. They are
sensing change of contact (On / Off) only.

Analog input uses a sensor, that provides modified current or electric potential when the
measured parameter (pressure, salinity, temperature etc.) is varying.
ConDor controller can use up to 4 analog inputs. Each one may be in the form of modified
current (4-20mA, 0-20mA) or modified potential (1-5V, 0-5V)
4-20mA or 1-5V as it enables the controller to detect damaged sensor or its connection wires.
The selection of the input mode is done in the programming (see page 15 ) and requires
certain hardware settings:
Four jumpers, located below the control panel, determine the mode of each input:
JP6- Input #1
JP5- input #2
JP7- Input #3
JP8- Input #4

The standard position is bridged jumper, that enables

input of 0-20mA or 4-20mA current to the relevant
connection.
Altering the jumpers setting should be done by the Bridged (standard) Open
0-20mA, 4-20mA 0-5V, 1-5V
Factory or by a certified distributor.

Analog sensors may use electric current supplied by:

a.The controller itself – use connections +24 , AI
b. External power supply- use connections GND, AI

The selection of the analog outputs mode (Current or Voltage modification) is done
in the programming (see page 16 ) and requires hardware settings:
Two jumpers, located in the connections panel, determine the mode of each input:
JP10- Output #1
JP11- Output #2

The standard position is shown in the

Drawing.
It enables 0-20mA or 4-20mA current in
the relevant connection.
Altering the jumpers setting should be
done by the factory or by a certified 0-20mA (Standard) 0-5 Volt
distributor.

Solenoids – ConDor can activate two 12VDC solenoid valves. Their respective
connection is marked on the connections panel.
Maximal current load of a solenoid output is 2A. In case the controller is located long
distance from the valve, take care to the proper calculation of solenoid connection wires- so
the voltage loss will not exceed 1.2V.
Most control functions use two solenoids only. Refer to page 2 for proper selection and
assembly of the solenoid valves.
In case more than one solenoid is connected to the outlet- use Relays

Alarm is an On / Off dry contact activated by the controller. The connection Is Normally-
Open.
The alarm will be activated (connection closes) when :
a. An analog sensor (4-20mA / 1-5V) is lost
b. Battery is too low.
c. Shot circuit of a Solenoid is.
d. The system entered “Out of range” position, and all restart trials were executed.

Battery should be connected as marked. Note the polarity of the connection!

The battery is required to backup the controller operation through power failure. The
standard battery is 12V, 6AH that will provide few hours operation at normal conditions.
In case longer periods of power loss are expected, or when the power source is a solar panel,
use a larger battery.

Solar Panel should be connected as marked. Note the polarity of the connection!
The selection of the Solar panel should be done considering the local sun radiation level and
the expected frequency of solenoids operation (frequent variations of operating conditions
dictate more correction pulses).
Recommended solar panel: 40W x 12V unit. The battery should be then 40AH x 12V.
Use a charge regulator to protect the battery from overcharge damage.

Internal 12VAC supply is, normally, connected to an internal transformer that is fed
by 220VAC mains connection.
Computer communication, using RS-485 cable, is not available yet although the
hardware was prepared.
