1. PATIENT PREPARATION
The patient preparation is a very important stage of the EEG recording in order to
realize a good contact impedance.
In the list below the main steps according to the standard procedures that the
technician/physician has to follow:
1. Localize the points on the patient’s scalp where the electrodes have to be
placed. According to the International 10-20 System 21 electrodes have to be
placed as it shown in the pictures below.
2. Treat the patient’s scalp with cotton and an abrasive gel in order to clean the
skin
3. If single electrodes are used each electrode is fixed on the scalp using an
adhesive and conductive paste.
If it is used a prewired headcup, this is fixed on patient’s scalp and then each
prewired electrodes will be filled with a specific gel by means of a syringe.
4. It is necessary to monitor the impedance value of each electrode to keep it
under 10 kOhm and to reduce the difference between electrodes as much as
possible (difference in impedance < 2 kOhm) .
To have a proper measurement at the impedance properly connect the
reference and ground electrodes before the measurement.
If the measure is higher than the threshold it could be necessary to clean again
the scalp and to apply some conductive gel/paste.
5. After the impedances check is completed it is possible to start the acquisition.
Usually the calibration signal and the impedances values are saved together as
the first stage of EEG acquisition.
In few and easy steps the user can realize the right connections and immediately
start with an EEG acquisition:
1. Link the Medical AC/DC Adapter output connector to BE NET DC in
(B9109000046 – Medical AC/DC Adapter)
2. Link BE NET DC out to BE Light Amplifier DC in (B8839000025 – Cable
SCH HRS MCH 8 CT – TRIAD01 MCH 4CT L=1m)
3. Link LAN 10/100 connector to PC/Laptop LAN (B9730660013 – CAT 5
Cross cable network direct connection L=5m)
4. Link the BE Light Optical Link to BE NET Optical link (B2654000001 –
Fibre-optic cable)
5. Link the power plug to electrical network
6. Switch on the preconfigured PC/Laptop
7. Start EEG acquisition

There is also a simplified procedure that enables you to create a new patient in the
Galileo Line database and simultaneously create an EEG trace not considering the
options and performances made available in the database (acquisition wizard).
These procedures are described in the following sections.
2. Complete the fields Last name, First name and Birth date (the others are
optional and may be left blank by the operator).
NOTE
It is also possible to press the button "New Data" instead of
"Confirm" to save the new patient and to immediately access the
next window that enables you to acquire a new trace.
3.1.3 Starting a new EEG trace from the Patient Management System
The following picture shows the steps to start a new EEG acquisition.
1. Select the patient for the new recording. The fastest way to find a patient from a
long list consists of sorting the list of patients by their Last name (press the key
on the header of the related column) and in typing the first letters of the full last
name and first name of the patient. The system will immediately select the
desired patient.
3. The search result will be displayed in a new window that shows a list of
patients. If the searched patient is there, select it clicking on the related line and
then click the “Confirm” button.
4. If the search doesn’t give result, click on cancel and fill the minimum for a new
patient insertion (Last name, First name and Birth date), then the patient will be
added in database.
5. After completing the form, select the type of recording, scrolling the drop down
list and selecting “EEG.NET”
6. Click on “Go on”.
2. The screen for the EEG mode is shown in the figure below and the red
sentences “Not Recording” notices that the acquisition is not started.
The following picture shows the main command/button available in the main
window.
button and then click on the red button “Disk Recording” in order
to start the acquisition.
window and click on “EEG” button in order to visualize the traces on the
screen. Starting from this point the raw data will be saved in the disk.
6. Set the Length Page, Sensitivity, High pass, Low Pass parameters in the
toolbar in order to correctly visualize the EEG traces:
- Page Length
- Sensitivity
- High Pass
- Low Pass
- Notch Filter
The Sensitivity, High Pass, Low Pass and Notch Filters parameters selectable
directly from the combos in the toolbar are only related to the pool EEG.
7. In order to modify the Sensitivity, High Pass, Low Pass and Notch Filters
parameters for the polygraphic channels is necessary to right-click on the
trace. This function is also available for the cephalic channels.
1. Open the Marker window and the Flash window clicking on the
specific button in the toolbar.
There are three different ways to insert the spots and states:
- Clicking on the spot/state in the Markers Window
- Drag&Drop directly from the Markers Window
- Double-clicking in the area traces automatically appear the Markers Window
(as it is shown in the picture below)
2. Click on the View entry in the main menu and enable the Montage Window
3. It is possible to customize the layout selecting and moving the windows in the
traces area where the user wants, realizing more different layouts according to
the user needs:
- Keeping press the left button over the upper border of the Montage
window and moving it in the traces area automatically the position cursors
will appear in the screen near the traces area borders.
- Dragging the Montage window over one some position cursor a “shadow”
shows the area where the windows will be placed.
- If the position is right drop the window in the current position leaving the
left button. Otherwise move again the window over others position cursors.
4. Once the layout has been defined by the user it is possible to save it clicking
on the “Tools” entry in the main menu and then on “Layout Explorer”.
5. The Layout Explorer window shows all the layout saved previously.
In order to save the current layout click on “Save as” button.
To open a layout previously saved directly select it from the list in the window
and then click on “Load” button.
6. The quantitative EEG can be performed during the acquisition for the
following tools:
- Spectrogram
- EEG Trend
The functions are available in the toolbar directly clicking on the specific
button. It is necessary to start the quantitative tools before to start the
recording.
Clicking on “EEG Trend” the available trend will be shown (see the following
picture)
Each of these tools is deeply described in the EEG Manual, where is explained
the trend meaning and how the trend has to be configured in order to correctly
work.
7. The EEG acquisition ends when the “Disk Recording” button is pressed
and automatically the red sentence “Not Recording” appears again. The other
way to stop the acquisition is directly closing the viewer window.
