Good Morning everyone. I’m Valerie Joy V Rivera and I’m going to present my answer for our 3 rd
Assignment and somehow discuss my viewpoint on the research study named “Characterising B
Corps as a sustainable business model: An exploratory study of B Corps in Australia”
2
So AYON, Nabasa naman natin lahat yung research study but I will just briefly discuss na rin
whatis B corps and what’s the purpose of the study.
Certified B Corporations or also known as b corps are social enterprises verified by Standards
Analysts at the B Lab, a nonprofit organization. They certify companies based on how they
create value for non-shareholding stakeholders, such as their employees, the local
community, and the environment. The B Corp community works toward reduced inequality,
lower levels of poverty, a healthier environment, stronger communities, and the creation of
more high quality jobs with dignity and purpose. By harnessing the power of business, B
Corps use profits and growth as a means to a greater end: positive impact for their
employees, communities, and the environment. B Corp Certification proves your business is
meeting the highest standards of verified performance. B Corp can be considered as a
certification system rather than a business model, and there is no research that examines the
classification of B Corp as a business model. B corp can be considered as a business model
since it has a socially and environmentally embedded mission and purpose, with a dominant
objective of creating positive societal impacts for its stakeholders rather than maximising
profit. And that’s the purpose of this study. To examine the characteristics of the B Corp
model in order to further understand the characteristics of sustainable business models that
align profit generation and societal impact.
3
Let’s now tackle the first question. Enumerate the important findings of the research study
titled “Characterizing B Corps as a sustainable business model”.
I based my answers sa four themes arised from the data analysis of the research. So the first
theme is Dominant objective: mission, purpose and leadership.
The Mission and Purpose of B Corps is to make enough profit to sustain the business and
reinvest in new products to achieve their social purpose. “profit with a purpose in short.” It is
not only made for the company’s sake in order to continue in the industry. B Corps believe
that they must be the change they seek and to use the B Corp model as a tool for change. It
also used a commercial business model and it exists to make a difference by setting their
goals based on a sustainability-focused mindset, philosophy or set of values it concerns. Sabi
ditto used a commercial business model. Like what normal businesses do, they sell their
products in the commercial market and/or charge fees for their services to generate profit
that is driven by a purpose. It is similar to the analytical framework (derived from the
characteristics of Sustainability business model’ (SBM) and Sustainability-driven hybrid (SDH)
business model ) where profit is set aside as the dominant objective of the firm.
Sa leadership naman, B Corps see themselves as leaders in a new way of conducting change
through thought leadership and helping to create a better world for current and future
generations. They partake in these actions by being very intentional not only to make a show
off for people to see what they are doing but to view it as their personal mission. B Corps also
considered leadership as one of being at the outward-facing or external aspects of leadership.
It means that for them, leadership is the forefront of driving change in the external
environment rather than driving change internally in the organization. On the other side,
characteristics of analytical framework refers to the leadership required to influence change
within an organization to embed sustainability.
4
Second theme naman is measuring success which includes impacts, externalities (internalise
social and environmental contexts) and economic growth.
In terms of impacts, -B Corps seek to minimize their negative environmental and social
impacts, such as emissions, waste and the use of chemical pesticides, but also seek to
increase positive social and environmental through their commercial transactions, rather
than through pro-bono or philanthropic activities. Another one is The B Corps reinvest their
profits in their products and services to grow their businesses to enable them to increase
their positive societal impacts. They also assess the social and financial contributions on a
project-by project or product-by-product basis, as some projects have more margin to
contribute to social outcomes.
Some of the companies measure success that pertains to impacts by using
Quantitative and/or qualitative evaluation ( the Customer/Retailer Feedbacks) , B corp’s pricing
model, and some approaches for distributing profits.

5
B corps measure success in terms of externalities means indirect cost that arises as an effect
of another party's activity. through internalising their impacts by integrating social
and environmental considerations throughout their product design and in all their decision-
making, which can reduce their profit margins. Other company suggested that Having a clear
pattern of awareness, passion, and action helps the B Corp model to internalise social and
environmental impacts at all stages of decision-making.

In terms of measuring economic growth naman, they focus on impact rather than the
economic growth. Since for them success is growth and the more na naggogrow sila, the
more they have a greater impact.
6
The third theme is the stakeholders. In this section, B corps Work closely with stakeholders to
reduce negative impacts. and" Shareholders are not considered as more important than other
stakeholders. While the while the analytical framework creates mutually beneficial relationships with all
stakeholders, As I said earlier, B Corps use profits and growth as a means to a greater end: for the
positive impact for their employees, communities, and the environment. They create benefit for all
stakeholders, not just shareholders.
While a sustainable business model treats nature as a stakeholder, none of the B Corps
considered the natural environment within their list of stakeholders. On the other side they
value nature as a vital component of the business environment.

7
The last theme is for Influencing sustainability agenda: institutional work
The analytical framework engages in institutional work to influence markets, policy makers and
industry institutions. While the B Corps have not engaged in the level of institutional work
suggested by the analytical framework, because many of them are engaging in work to
‘mainstream’ the B Corp model to the extent that the B Corp approach will become business as
usual and a discrete B Corp model will be redundant. They engage in awareness-building, education,
advocacy and lobbying. They believe that Building awareness is critical to mainstreaming the model. This
entails education of and communication to the business community, to investors and the media.

B corps Lobby government for initiatives to support B Corps working individually

and with others to drive policy changes.

And they also engage in Advocacy activities to promote the B Corp values and model and
educate people about a better way to do business. This entails engaging with governments
directly, engaging with companies to help them improve, engaging directly with
individuals, clients and schools, and through campaigns and public seminars targeted at
raising awareness and changing industry practices.

8
The article is connected to a sustainable business model since it both exhibits circumstances that
require assessing the right operations and processes to achieve sustainable impact. The research
study’s goal was to deeply understand the B Corp model and how its characteristics are related to the
sustainable business model. As mentioned above, the findings of the study lead to enlightenment on
how the B Corp Model engages to make a profit not only for money but for the purpose behind it.
They both desire to increase positive impacts and to decrease all negative impacts in all aspects. The
B Corp model is connected with Spectrum of the Company Maturity since it somehow underwent
corporate social responsibility for the improvement of core policies, the compliance-driven, the
reactive changes for sustainability, and lastly the sustainable business model innovation considering
that they both innovate new norms, ideas, and products towards their own societal purpose.
Sustainable Business Model is the framework that engaged in corporate innovation that leads to
assurance for greater sustainability and competitive advantage. At the same time, B Corps are the
corporate forms of business that affect the sustainable business model and the standard for socially
and environmentally business.
