Prompts: Convert the phrase outline of the article, “Hypertension in

Africa: A Rising Deadly Epidemic” to a sentence outline.

“Hypertension in Africa: A Rising Deadly Epidemic”

 I. Hypertension is a global problem affected many people and families not only in Africa but across
the globe. 

A. One billion people across the globe live with high blood pressure according to  the worldwide
statistics.

B. The dangers of hypertension can be cardiovascular related diseases such as heart attacks and
various types of strokes as well as kidney failure, if not treated well.

C. The figures show a worrying trend of increasing hypertension and related illnesses in Africa.

II. The spread of hypertension around the continent surpassed those Europe and the U.S. 

A. The main reason of the spread is that hypertension was considered a western disease
and Africa never paid so much attention to it.

1. The urbanization in Africa introduced a new lifestyle trend that have swept across the
entire continent.

2. People are indulging in unhealthy lifestyles such as eating bad food and lack of


exercise.

B. The continent faces unique challenges which have hampered their fight against hypertension.

1. The ignorance of the disease of many people in Africa leads to failure of seeking
treatment in time.

2. The high cost of medication has locked out many people for getting the best


treatment as they chose to manage hypertension using effective and safe home
remedies.

C. The detection of hypertension can easily be a routinely checking of blood pressure.

1. To effectively fight hypertension, Africa needs to increase awareness about the


disease.

2. The government initiative to provide better healthcare facilities to ensure that the


people get quality services.

D. The statistics and figures vary from one part of the continent to another.
1. According to statistics, West Africa has the lowest rate of hypertension
at 15%, East Africa with 25% and South Africa with 42% to 54%.

2. The figures shows the cause of growing rates of hypertension in Africa.

a. The scarcity of health resources in the continent is one reason of fast


spreading of hypertension in Africa.

b. The presence of other disease such as malaria, HIV and TB.

c. And the little awareness of the people on hypertension.

E. The effects of cardiovascular disease in hypertension rates in Africa.

1. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Africa.

2. People become sick and unable to work or die leaving their families in poverty which


affected Africa’s economic growth negatively.

III. The fight against hypertension in Africa can succeed through sustainable and effective best
practices and simple measures. 

A. The prevention and control of hypertension in Africa.

B. The formulation of policies and careful implementation via a multi-sectorial model.

C. The cooperation in the government bodies and other stakeholders in the health industry.

D. The changes in lifestyle of the Africans by eating healthy foods, exercising regularly and
avoiding stress.
