▪Animals are also living things found in our surroundings. Different
animals live in different places. Some animals live on land others live in
water and some live on both places. They live in many places like house,
garden, farm, pond, river, sea, mountain and forest.
The most common animals that you can observe everyday are those
kept as pets. Dogs, cats, turtles, parrots, doves and fish are animals that
can be your pet at home. Some animals are kept on farms like chicken,
ducks, goats, pigs, carabaos, cows and horses.
● There are animals with two legs. Others have four.
● Some are covered with shell, feathers, scales and fur.

Lolo Nonoy’s Farm Animals


Lolo Nonoy’s farm has a lot of animals. There are two pigs, three goats, ten
chickens, seven ducks and a carabao. These animals help him in sustaining the basic needs
of our family. His favorite animal is carabao. It is my Lolo’s helper in the farm. There are
animals that have four legs like pigs, goats and carabao. Their body coverings are their skin.
Chickens and ducks have two legs. They can fly, walk and run. These animals are found in
the farm of Lolo Nonoy.

Key Concept:
▪Animals have common body parts like the head, the legs, and the
body. They use these common body parts for eating, seeing, breathing,
walking, running, and other movements.
● The Common Body Parts of Animals and Its Functions
Head- It is where the mouth, the nose, ears, tongue, and teeth (if the
animal has it)- are located. They use these parts for sensing. They
use the eyes for seeing, the nose for breathing, the ears for hearing,
and the tongue and if the animal has it, teeth for eating.

Body- It is the biggest part where the internal organs are located and
safeguarded. Other parts like the feet, neck, wings, tails, and fins
are attached to the body.

Legs- Legs are located below the body. It enables the dog to walk and
run. Animals use their legs to look for food. Other animals like
monkeys and horses use their legs to protect themselves.
● The Special Body Parts of animals and its function.
Tail- The tail of an animal is the part extending beyond the end of its body.
It is used for balance and communication.
Fur- It is a thick growth of hair that covers the skin of an animal. It protects
them from cold and the heat of the sun.
Wings- These are set of special forelimbs on either side of a bird’s body and
use it for flying.
Beak- Beak is made of thin, hornlike material. It is used for picking up food.
Hock- It is the joint between the drumstick on a chicken and the ankle joint.
It allows them to bend their legs.
Toes-These are attached to the foot which are used by chickens and birds
to maintain their balance.
Tail feathers-This is composed of feathers pointing upward and used for
balance while walking.
Scales- It is the body covering of a fish which protect them from their
environment.
Gills- It is located under the gill cover and is used for breathing or respiration. Fins- Fins
are located in the different parts of the body of a fish. It helps the
fish swim especially in balancing and turning.

▪ You can classify animals according to the different physical
characteristics of their parts and uses. They can be classified according to
body parts.
You can classify them according to their body shape, number
of legs and how they move. Some walk, some hop and jump while others
fly and others swim.
We can also classify animals by their body coverings.
Hair, fur, scales, feather and shells are the common types of body
covering of animals.
A. Observe how a cow, goat and dog move from place to another.

B. Do you like to go swimming? Can you name some animals that can
swim?
• These animals swim. Some animals use their fins and tail to swim, and
grills to breathe under the water (e.g. fish). Turtles could also crawl, while
frogs could hop/jump.

• Animals help us in many ways.
A. Animals are sources of food. Some animals give us food. They give us
meat, milk, eggs, cheese and butter.

Many people take care of animals as pets. The most common pets are
cats, dogs, rabbits, pigs and fishes. They are domesticated animals at
home. Other pets are good to play with and may make a nice
companion.

Carabaos help farmers plow the fields. They help prepare the land
for planting.

People get clothing materials like wool, leather, fur and silk for coats.
The skin of some animals like snakes and crocodiles is used to make
leather shoes, belts and bags.
● Sheep’s hair is used to make jackets and sweater.
● Coats come from animals’ hair to keep us warm.
● Shells and horns of some animals are made for decorations.

Key Concept:

Plants play a vital role in our lives. They


provide human needs and necessities. Plants
provide food and materials for man’s use like
clothing and medicine. They also beautify
the surroundings when they are used for
decoration and display.

Plants as Food

Humans use green plants as food. The leaves, seeds or fruits and even flowers can
be eaten. These plants are called vegetables. Vegetables are good for our body.
Healthy living includes healthy diet through eating fruits and vegetables.

Plants as Material Used in Making Clothes

There are also plants that provide us with materials that


can be made into cloth for clothing. Some of these plants
are cotton, ramie, abaca and pineapple leaves.
Pineapple leaves are often used in making “barong”.

Plants as Medicine

Medicines are substances which prevent or cure ailments. Many medicines come from plants. Some
plants are grown under controlled conditions to produce medicine. They are also called herbal plants or
medicinal plants.

Guava leaves are used for washing wounds and used for
aromatic bath.

Guyabano leaves are used to cure stomach pain and diarrhea.

The juice of pound leaves of oregano is also


good for cough and asthma.

Tanglad or lemongrass can be used as mouthwash


and also used to cure headache.

There are plants that can be used as both food and medicine.

Plants as Decoration and Display

Ornamental and flowering plants give attractions and add to the beauty of a particular scenery. The come in
many colors and sizes.
