Let Us In

By
Matthew Household

Based on a true story.

EXT/INT. HOME - NIGHT
The front door of the house is shown to open from the side.
Dad, who we don’t see the face of, steps out, carrying a bag
of garbage. He pulls the door closed and walks down the
street. He puts the garbage bag in a trash can. The door is
shown again. It slowly opens just slightly. Dad’s face is
shown as he walks back to the house. He reaches his hand
toward the door and stops, realizing he must have left it
open. He appears annoyed at himself for the error and steps
inside.

Dad takes off his coat and hangs it up. Suddenly the screams
of two young girls are heard, startling Dad, who looks very
concerned. The camera pushes in on his face. He rushes out
of the shot.

INT. GIRLS’ ROOM - NIGHT

DAD runs into the girls’ room, throwing the door open. The
girls, JESS and MARY, are sitting on the floor, playing with
dolls. They are identical twins (if possible). Dad looks
confused.
DAD
Jess! Mary! Why did you scream?
They look at him simultaneously.

JESS
Daddy, we didn’t hear anything.
She looks at Mary, who looks at her.

MARY
We didn’t hear anything, Daddy.
They both look at Dad at the same time. He looks from one to
the other.

DAD
Oh.
He turns to go, but then stops. He turns back, confused.

DAD
Are you sure?
MARY
(sternly)
Yes.

JESS
(simultaneously with Mary)
Yes.
He looks at one, and then the other.

DAD
(cautiously)
Okay. Well, tell me if... well, you
know.

Pause.
DAD
Remember, your mom comes back from
her trip tomorrow!

He walks away, and leaves the door slightly open.

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

DAD is sitting in a comfortable armchair, reading a
newspaper and wearing spectacles. He shuts it to look at the
back. He sees that the girls are standing in the middle of
the room, side by side. He puts down the newspaper and takes
off his glasses, smiling at them. They do not smile back.
DAD
Oh, hi girls.
JESS
Daddy, would you play a game with
us?

MARY
Would you play a game with us,
Daddy?
DAD
Oh, I-
He is interrupted by the sound of a ringing phone. He takes
a cell phone out of his pocket and looks at the caller. He
smiles guiltily at his daughters.

DAD
I’m afraid I have to take this.
The girls show no sign of emotion. Dad stands up and points
to the phone awkwardly.

DAD
I’ll just- uh, take this in the
bathroom.

He walks past the girls, who follow him with their eyes.

INT. BATHROOM - NIGHT

DAD walks into the bathroom and shuts the door, locking it.
He takes the call.
DAD
(almost whispering)
Hi, Rebbecca. Listen, I told you
never to call me here. What if my
daughters picked up my cell phone
for me?
He looks annoyed.

DAD
(slightly louder)
I know, I know, we are going to get
married. I just- I’ve got my
daughters to think about too! I
can’t just walk out on their
mother.
One of the girls’ eyes are shown shut.
DAD
Rebecca. Rebecca?
He looks at the phone. There are no signal bars.
DAD
No signal. Damn Tmobile.

GIRLS
(O.S, simultaneously)
Daddy!
Dad looks at the door.

DAD
Just a second!
GIRLS
(O.S, simultaneously)
Come out and play.
Someone tries to open the door.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 4.

DAD
Just- just give me a-
GIRLS
(O.S, simultaneously, deep
male voices and whispers
joining theirs)
Daddy. Daddy!
The door begins to shake. Dad stares at it. It begins to
shake violently.

GIRLS
(O.S, now a mixture of many
voices and whispers, echoing)
Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!

DAD
(over the voices)
What the hell? Jess! Mary!
The door shakes more and more.

DAD
(desperate)
Jess! Mary! What’s going on?!
Girls!
The shaking stops. Dad waits.

DAD
(under his breath)
Wha- what?

DAD
(voice cracking)
Girls?
He clears his throat.

DAD
(louder)
Girls?
Something moves at the bottom of the door. Dad stares at it.
A piece of paper is being pushed in. He starts walking
towards it, cautiously. He looks in the mirror at himself,
wide-eyed, on his way over. He bends down and picks up the
paper, which is folded over. He unfolds it to see some text
scrawled onto it. It says: "Let us in". He stares at it, and
then folds it up again.

CONTINUED: 5.

DAD
(frightened)
Girls...?
He waits, and then cautiously bends down. He puts his eye to
the keyhole and stares out. One of the daughters’ eyes
stares back at him.
DAD
Jess? Mary?

Suddenly the door starts shaking violently again and Dad

falls backwards. He backs up on the ground, terrified. The
door shakes more, and then is broken open. Dad covers his
face as the door is thrown open, and waits. He looks up
carefully. There is no one on the other side. He slowly
stands up.

DAD
(calling)
Jess. Mary.

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Dad slowly walks out of the bathroom, searching every nook
and cranny as he enters the living room.
DAD
Girls!
He is completely bewildered and has no idea what to do. He
runs his hand through his hair. Suddenly the lights turn out
and there is a high-pitched, heavily distorted scream. Dad
covers his ears and falls on his knees.
DISTORTED VOICE
Let us in. Let us in.
DAD
(shouting)
I’m out! I’m out of the bathroom!
I’m here!
DISTORTED VOICE
Let us in.

DAD
(shouting)
What! What do you want?
