Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in English (Grade III)

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, students are expected to:
 Identify the characters and events in the story;
 Put in sequence the event in the story; and
 Write a short story that will include characters, settings, conflict, plot and
resolution.

II. Subject Matter


Topic: Elements of the Short Story
Reference: EN3RC-II0-2.2
Materials: Laptop, projector and short story.

III. Procedure
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
 The students will be requested to lead the prayer.
2. Greeting
3. Checking of Attendance
4. Passing of Assignment
5. Review
What was our topic last meeting?

B. Motivation
 With the use of the projector and the laptop, the teacher will show the
class a video of a short story, entitled “The Rabbit and The Turtle”
 Questions
Who are the Characters in the story?
Where did the story happen?
What is the moral lesson of the story?

C. Lesson Proper
 Presentation of the lesson
- With the use of PowerPoint, the teacher will discuss the following Element of a
Short Story.
- CHARACTERS
Character is a person, or sometimes an animal, who takes a part in the
action of a short story or other literary work.
- SETTINGS
Setting is the time and the place that a story occurs.
- CONFLICT
Conflict is any of the problems that a character encounters in a story.
- PLOT
Plot is a pattern of events that develop from the interactions between
characters.
- RESOLUTION
The conclusion of the plot.
D. Application
 The teacher will give the class a copy of a short story entitled The Last
Leaf by O. Henry. The students will read the story silently. As the
students read the story, the teacher will ask the students to underline the
name of the characters, the setting, conflict, plot and resolution.
 Questions:
Who are the characters of the story?
Where and when did the story happen?
How did the story ended?

E. Generalization
 Question:
What are the elements of the short story?
How did you find the story you have read?

IV. Evaluation
Directions: In your quiz notebook, write a short story that includes the
characters, setting, conflict, plot and resolution. (Students are given 20 minutes
to finish the quiz).

V. Assignment

Directions: Go over the story again. In your assignment notebook write an essay based
on the guide questions below:

1. What can you say about the friendship of Johnsy and Sue?
2. Do you have a friend like Sue?
3. What is the most caring action your friend did for you?
4. What are you willing to do for your friends?
