05 - Finding A Special Pattern With Functions-2

This document provides instructions for a series of exercises involving evaluating functions. Learners are asked to evaluate sample functions, perform calculations with the results, and locate their answers in a number search grid. The remaining numbers in the grid will form a special pattern once the exercises are completed.

Finding a Special Pattern with Functions

Each exercise has three parts. Parts 1 & 2 of each exercise ask you to evaluate a function
following the given rule. The rule may be stated verbally, symbolically, graphically or
numerically. Part 3 of each exercise asks you to use the answers you found in parts 1 & 2 to
determine some other number. Locate your answer to part 3 in the number-search and
highlight (or circle) the numbers. After you have completed all the exercises, the numbers
remaining in the number-search will form a special pattern.

1. A x   2x3  5
Part 1. Evaluate: A 4 Part 2. Evaluate: A 2 Part 3. Determine: A  4  A  2

2. B  x  is the function that multiplies the input by 100 and then subtracts 5.
Part 1. Evaluate: B  9 Part 2. Evaluate: B 10.34 Part 3. Determine: B  9  B 10.34

3. C  x  is the function defined by the following graph. The graph window is:
[-10,10,1] by [-10,10,1]

Part 1. Evaluate: C  2  Part 2. Evaluate: C  1 Part 3. Determine: C  2   C  1
4 2
4. D  x  is the function defined by the following table of values:

x -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4 5
D  x -1045 2032 -2045 5204 -9612 6457 -4576 3578 -7412

Part 1. Evaluate: D  0 Part 2. Evaluate: D  5 Part 3. Determine: D  0  D  5

5. E  x   4 x  33

Part 1. Evaluate: E  22 Part 2. Evaluate: E 82 E 82

E 228
Part 3. Determine:

6. F  x  is the function that determines the absolute value of the cube of the input.

Part 1. Evaluate: F  5 Part 2. Evaluate: F  7  Part 3. Determine: F  5  F  7

7. G  x  is the function defined by the following graph. The graph window is:
[-3,5,1] by [-60,80,10]

Part 1. Evaluate: G  1 Part 2. Evaluate: G  2  Part 3. Determine:

G  1  G  2  4  G  1
3 2

10
8. H  x  is the function defined by the following table of values:

x -30 -25 -20 -15 -10 -5 0 5 10

H  x 3 6 12 24 48 96 192 384 768

Part 1. Evaluate: H  5 Part 2. Evaluate: H 10 Part 3. Determine:

7  H 10  3  H  5

9. Now, find your answers to the “Part 3” exercises in the number search. They may be
horizontally, vertically or diagonally, and may be backwards. Highlight or circle the
numbers.

4 2 8 7 5 3
8 9 7 1 1 2
6 8 5 9 4 9
1 5 2 9 3 1
2 4 6 6 5 6
6 1 2 6 1 6
Once you have found all the numbers, list the remaining digits as they are listed, from left to
right, top to bottom.

10. There is something special about the remaining digits. What is it? [Hint: put a decimal point
in after the first listed digit!]
