The first step in demonstrating your research skills in a capstone project is by writing a
very comprehensive, coherent, and forthright Introduction Chapter.
An excellent introduction should have an introductory and background information that
presents the issues that your study will address.

At the end of the lesson the student the learners should be able to,
a. identify a scientific problem or question
b. differentiate applied and basic research problems

Quantitative Research

Qualitative Research

Examples

Research is a process of systematic inquiry that entails collection of data; documentation

of critical information; and analysis and interpretation of that data/information, in
accordance with suitable methodologies set by specific professional fields and academic
disciplines.
➢ Research is "creative and systematic work undertaken to increase the stock
of knowledge". It involves the collection, organization, and analysis of information to
increase understanding of a topic or issue. A research project may be an expansion
on past work in the field. Research projects can be used to develop further knowledge
on a topic, or for education. To test the validity of instruments, procedures, or
experiments, research may replicate elements of prior projects or the project as a
whole.
➢ The primary purposes of basic research (as opposed to applied research) are
documentation, discovery, interpretation, and the research and development (R&D)
of methods and systems for the advancement of human knowledge. Approaches to
research depend on epistemologies, which vary considerably both within and between
humanities and sciences. There are several forms of research: scientific, humanities,
artistic economic, social, business, marketing, practitioner research, life,
technological, etc. The scientific study of research practices is known as meta-
research.

➢A scientific problem is something you don't understand but you can do an experiment
to help you understand. Scientific problems are usually based on observation
of scientific phenomena. Here is some advice to help you identify a scientific
problem you can address by designing your own experiment.
➢ What is an example of a scientific problem?
A scientific problem is a question that you have that can be answered via an experiment.
... That's because not all questions can be answered with an experiment.
For example, the problem of trying to figure out what to have for dinner isn't
a scientific problem, since you can't conduct an experiment to find the answer.
How do you make a scientific problem?
The scientific method has five basic steps, plus one feedback step:
❖ Make an observation.
❖ Ask a question.
❖ Form a hypothesis, or testable explanation.
❖ Make a prediction based on the hypothesis.
❖ Test the prediction.
❖ Iterate: use the results to make new hypotheses or predictions.

SCIENTIFIC
METHOD

Applied research is a methodology used to solve a specific, practical issue affecting an

individual or group. This scientific method of study and research is used in business,
medicine, and education in order to find solutions that may improve health, solve scientific
problems or develop new technology.
Examples of applied research in psychology include:
• To improve workplace commitment by arriving at practical worker-motivation strategies.
• Investigating treatment and management options for anxiety and panic attacks.
• Investigating factors that improve worker's productivity.
Characteristics of Applied Research:
• Also called Professional Research.
• Problems tend to be more practical.
• Seeks to find solutions to immediate problems and issues.
• Tends to be organizationally focused.
• Findings are usually kept private.
• Results are usually used internally to make decisions and establish strategy
5|Page CAPSTONE PROJECT-GRADE 12

Two Major Types of Applied Research?

• Conceptualize: specify what is to be studied.

• Operationalize: develop specific steps to measure concepts.
• Observe: collect empirical data.
• Analyze: draw conclusions from the data.
• Apply conclusions to original inquiries.

What is applied product research?

Applied research is defined as work aimed towards building knowledge and/or
developing technology solutions, while product development is work aimed at launching
a certain product at the market.

Basic research is a type of research approach that is aimed at gaining a better

understanding of a subject, phenomenon or basic law of nature. This type of research is
primarily focused on the advancement of knowledge rather than solving a specific
problem.
Basic research, also called pure research or fundamental research, is a type of scientific
research with the aim of improving scientific theories for better understanding and
prediction of natural or other phenomena.
Example of Scientific questions
• What is the universe made of? Astronomers face an embarrassing conundrum: they
don't know what 95% of the universe is made of. ...
• How did life begin? ...
• Are we alone in the universe? ...
• What makes us human? ...
• What is consciousness? ...
• Why do we dream? ...
• Why is there stuff? ...
• Is there any other universe?
