Sociology helps us look more objectively at our society and other societies. It directs attention to
how the parts of society fit together and change, as well as makes us aware of the consequences of that
social change.
The nature of political science is that it is a social science. This means that it is concerned with the
relationships between human beings and between human beings and their societies.

ACTIVITY 3
Filipinos’ addiction in social media
In today’s generation, social media is undeniably the greatest tool to influence the society and mostly to
the youth. We, Filipino spend a lot of time on social media to relax, be updated to the new trend and etc. We
became more addicted to social media, reason why sometimes we forgot to eat, sleep early in the night and we
even forget to take care of ourselves. As a result, many of Filipino especially to the youth struggling health problem
(physically and mentally), social anxiety, depression and etc. Beating this is not something that can be done
overnight, but if you really want to beat it, you can do it by engaging physical activities and lessen your time in
using gadget and social media.

Filipinos’ reaction in manifestations of popularity

Mobile phone, the history of mobile phones goes back to 1908 when a US Patent was issued in Kentucky
for a wireless telephone. Mobile phones were invented as early as the 1940s when engineers working at AT&T
developed cells for mobile phone base stations. The very first mobile phones were not really mobile phones at all.
Today, cell phone reception has improved greatly due to the use of satellites and wireless services. As cell phones
improved and became simple to use, the importance of cell phones increased accordingly. Cell phones are the
perfect way to stay connected with others and provide the user with a sense of security.

ACTIVITY 4
Society and culture greatly influence everything in our daily lives, from our developmental stage to the
adulting phase of our lives. We are social beings, and therefore, our choices and decisions happened in the context
of social connections, personal relationships, cultural aspects, and physical environments. Which all of it will have
an impact on the formation of who we will become through the help and contribution of other people. In all aspects
of life, change is the only constant thing that we can't avoid and each change affects us as a person. It can be a small
or big change.
Subsequently, the fact implies that culture influences our beliefs of what is wrong and right, our
perception including our tastes and references, our morals or to what good and bad and our behavioral patterns.
Hence, our identities are formed as a result of this cultural influences.

INTRODUCTION
Visayan people, are a Philippine ethnolinguistic group native to the whole Visayas, the southernmost
islands of Luzon and many parts of Mindanao. They are the largest ethnic group in the geographical division of the
country when taken as a single group, numbering some 33.5 million. The Visayas broadly share a maritime culture
with strong Roman Catholic traditions merged with cultural elements through centuries of interaction and inter-
migrations mainly across the seas of Visayas, Sibuyan, Camotes, Bohol and Sulu and in some secluded areas merged
with ancient animistic-polytheistic influences (i.e. Folk Catholicism). Most Visayans are speakers of one or more
Bisayan languages, the most widely spoken being Cebuano, followed by Hiligaynon (Ilonggo) and Waray-Waray.

The Visayans have a bigger religious life. The Roman Catholic religion helps them focus on the Kinship
system. The Visayans also have a nuclear family, which influences them to become more involved in religion.
Unlike our culture, in the Visayan culture, the Roman Catholic faith plays a central role. In the United States,
religion does not play such a central role in culture. Their religion influences their rituals, festivals, and
celebrations.
One of the rituals the Visayan people practice is rice ritual. The name of their rice ritual is a Christianized
ritual. They pray to God and hope for the rice to have the right characteristics. It gives the farmers comfort
knowing the rice will grow successfully since God is in control. Arens states: “In the Christianized ritual the
invocations are directed to God and the amulets or charms used now are the symbolic expression of a prayer to.
The Visayan people have many different rituals that their culture practices. These rituals are what make the
Visayans culture unique from others. Without rituals, human development would suffer in this culture. The
structure of the Visayans culture is partly made up of their rituals. Their ritual life is the central focus of their
culture.
The popular image of Visayans is of a passionate, fun-loving, brave, and musical people. Many are
professional fighters. Their major economic activity is the cultivation of maize and irrigated rice. They are also
famous for their guitars, baskets, hats, and mats of all types. They are proud of their being artistic and creative;
various forms of art (painting, sculpting, and drawing), singing, dancing, and writing are cornerstones of bisaya
culture.
Visayans are known in the Philippines for their festivities such as the Ati-Atihan, Dinagyang, Pintados-
Kasadyaan, Sangyaw, Sinulog festivals. Festivals there are definitely celebrated in different ways; but with one goal
and that is to manifest the Visayans faith and love of God, to preserved the culture and to build unity with one
another. These festivals represent their culture to be preserved and be globally recognized.

3 things that I have learned from them is the way they live, their different rituals that their culture practices and
their different festivals.

ACTIVITY 5
SPEECH
Numerous variations of religion are being introduced in the world today. However, for people who
consider religion as an essential aspect of living, the profusion of these varieties can be quite baffling.
When I was still young I'm already an Adventist co'z my family is also a Adventist. There's a lot of
prohibition especially when it comes to food, we also do not wear jewelry and we also do not celebrate Christmas
or other religious festivals throughout the calendar year as holy feasts established by God. The only period in time
we celebrate as holy, is the weekly Sabbath (from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset). We also observe the sabbath
from Friday evening to Saturday evening. During the sabbath, we avoid secular work and business, although
medical relief and humanitarian work is accepted. I know that most of you observe Sunday as a sabbath day and it
is fine cause we have different beliefs right? The only thing that I'm sure that we're common is we have the same
God we worship. It's not a big deal when we worship God co'z as long as possible we can worship him everyday
through singing a spiritual song, reading bible, and praying everyday.
Some of us are still confused about what church where we go. Some people think that they will go to this
church so that they can save, they will go to this church co'z they think that, that is the right church. But you know
what really matter is, our faith to him because our religion can't save us, but only our faith and relationship to Him.
God sees what's in our heart, God sees how deep our relationship to him, God sees everything and also God knows
everything. Yes, it is true that we can't see Him, but through His overflowing blessings, protection, and guidance we
can be able to feel His presence.
There is no one wise enough to judge the correctness of one religion when compared to another. People
might end up building or losing faith when discovering the difference between other religion and Seventh Day
Adventist, but when it comes to one’s faith and ultimate salvation, it all lies on the individual’s heart and mind to
make a decision on which religion to follow. After all, all our religions point towards a single direction to the
Mighty Creator and share all fundamental beliefs of Christianity.

ACTIVITY 2: THINK IT OVER
1. SCHOOL
School are agents of socialization that not only teach us subject knowledge and life skills but also social
skills through our interactions with teachers, staff, and other students.
FAMILY
Family is usually considered to be the most important agent of socialization. They not only teach us how to
care for ourselves, but also give us our first system of values, norms, and beliefs.
COMMUNITY
The community is a socializing agent because it is where children learn the role expectations for adults as
well as for themselves.
GOVERNMENT
The government itself is an agent of socialization, especially if it delivers rising living standards. Many
government activities are intended to explain or display the government to the public, always designed to build
support and loyalty.
FRIENDS
They provide perspective outside of individual's viewpoints. Members inside peer groups also learn to
develop relationships with others in the social system. Peers, particularly group members, become important
social referents for teaching members' customs, social norms, and different ideologies.

2. The most important part in the development of a person is family it is because family is the most significant
agent of socialization as it is the ”original group” and a source of primary socialization. The family is where
members receive their earliest exposure to society’s expectations. Family begins the life-long process of
learning language, norms, and values. Family also instills understanding of authority and hierarchies.
However, this significance decreases with age due to secondary socialization from peer groups and education,
and increasingly because of globalization and exposure to mass media.
3. Socialization is the process through which we learn the norms, customs, values, and roles of the society, from
birth through death. Enculturation, on the other hand, is the process by which we learn the requirements of
our surrounding culture and acquire the behaviors and values appropriate for this culture.

myself.

After reading and completing this module I have learned that socialization is the process through which we learn
the norms, customs, values, and roles of the society, from birth through death. Enculturation, on the other hand, is
the process by which we learn the requirements of our surrounding culture and acquire the behaviors and values
appropriate for this culture

My learnings form this module inspires me to become a better person and be a productive person in socializing
others.
