The goal of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games is to
host a high-level Olympic Games with distinguishing
features. To this end, offering cultural activities bearing
the unique features of the host city and country is a
must to augment the excitement of the sports events.
According to the Beijing 2008 Cultural Program, the
Chinese capital will present a series of diverse and
creative arts and cultural activities with international
participation from June to September. Artists from home
and abroad will come together in this cultural pageant
and will experience the cultural features of the Beijing
2008 Olympic Games: Chinese in style, magnificence,
modernity and public participation.

Symbol of Beijing Olympic Cultural Festival

The Cultural Festival Symbol shows a human being
and a lantern dancing joyfully. Lanterns are part of
every traditional Chinese festival: they symbolize
reunions and happiness, and epitomize the essence
of traditional Chinese culture. The Beijing Olympic
Cultural Festival is also a cultural pageant of mankind
that people all across China welcome on this occasion.
During the festival Beijing will be decorated with
lanterns and streamers to welcome guests from all
around the world. The unique Chinese artistic form,
calligraphy, is used in the design of the secondary
mark, set off from the Olympic emblem "Chinese Seal,
Dancing Beijing."

There will be a 90-minute arts performance at the
Flag-Raising Square at the Paralympic Village every
evening from September 7 to 16, 2008, during
the Paralympics. Ten performances will be staged,
centered on the Paralympic concept. The programs
will have the same contents as during the Olympics
yet reflect the sensibilities of people with a disability.
Artists with disabilities will be invited to join in the
performances. The idea is to create an ideal platform
for people with and without disabilities to interact
and to create a happy and harmonious environment

the Paralympics
During the Paralympics from September 7 to
September 16, the Xiang Yun Theatre will arrange a

The China Story Exhibition

The China Story Exhibition will take place on the
Culture Square of the Olympic Green, displaying
the traditional culture of China while focusing on
the visitors’ experience. More than 30 Xiang Yun
huts full of cultural mystery will be set up to display
the folk and popular cultures of different parts of
China through pictures, objects and audio-visual
materials. Handicraft performances and interactions
on the scene will draw visitors close to several
national-level intangible cultural heritage sites and
activities in China and will leave them with valuable
experiences and unforgettable memories.
 Beijing 2008 Olympic Cultural Festival
2008 is the Olympic Year of Beijing and China, and also of the world. From June 23 to September
16, the Sixth Beijing Olympic Cultural Festival will take place in Beijing, jointly organized by
the Ministry of Culture of People’s Republic of China, State Administration of Radio, Film
and Television (SARFT), General Administration of Sport of China (GAS), Beijing Municipal
Government, the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG),
China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and the China Disabled Persons' Federation.
The Olympic Cultural Festival carries on the concept of “People’s Olympics” of the Beijing
Olympics and takes the theme of “we are the world, we live in harmony.” Cultural activities in
various forms will be held during the nearly three-month period. Shows and exhibitions of national
and international levels will take place citywide, which will express the Olympic aspirations of
“One World One Dream” and the Paralympic ideal of “Transcendence, Equality and Integration.”
The festival will create a joyous, passionate and harmonious environment of People’s Olympics
as well as a festival atmosphere. The aim is to let friends from five continents of the world feel the
historical and cultural charms of the host city and country, and at the same time enjoy the high-

Here you will find venues for Chinese and foreign
performance groups and community residents

cultural exchange from July 13 to August 24. Each
of the cultural squares will have big TV screens
where people can view broadcasts of Olympic
matches, a center stage and functional areas for
exhibitions, souvenir exchanges, beverage services,
sponsor exhibitions, audience information services
and more. The various Olympic Live Sites will
also feature special local cultural features based
on their geographical locations. The programs
include music, singing, dancing, acrobatics and the
martial arts. Exhibitions cover Olympic history and

Started in 1912 at the Stockholm Olympics, the Olympic Youth Camp is an important part of the Olympic
Games. Beijing Olympic Youth Camp is co-organized by BOCOG and the China Youth Federation.
Nearly 500 young people from more than 200 countries will gather in Beijing, including for the first
time some disabled youths. Over 12 days, young people between the ages of 16 and 18 will gather
under the theme “harmony, tolerance, experience, confirmation and creativity,” with the theme slogan
of “youths create the future,” and with a goal of spreading the Olympic spirit and promoting world
