TLE 6 AGRICULTURE QUARTER 2 WEEK 5

Learning Competencies
Propagates trees and fruit-bearing trees using scientific processes.
Learning Objectives
1.Identify the appropriate tools and equipment in plant propagation and their
uses.
2. Demonstrate scientific ways of propagating fruit bearing- trees.
3. Observe healthy and safety measures in propagating fruit-
bearing trees.
4. Use the systematic and scientific ways of caring orchard trees
and seedlings.
5. Performs systematic and scientific ways of caring orchard
trees/seedling such as watering, cultivating, preparing, and applying
organic fertilizer
Let’s Recall (Review)
Directions: In your answer sheet write the correct words that describe the
statement in preparing an orchard layout.
1. Planting on the end of each side of the square.
2. Planting on the end side of triangle.
3. Planting on the end of each side of the rectangle.
4. These patterns originally start from a square of shape, but you
are going to plant at the center of square
5. This will serve as the nursery of the seedling.
Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)
Naming the appropriate tools and equipment in plant propagation
and their uses:

Here are demonstrations of scientific ways of propagating fruit-bearing

trees:
T-Budding- is a method in which two plant parts, the mature lateral bud
from a scion is attached to another plant of the same family which
eventually produces a sprout to form a new plant.

1
Steps in Budding.

1. Select bud wood for budding.

2. Cut the selected bud

3. Prepare the bud.

4. Prepare the rootstock

5. Join the bud to the rootstock

6. Bind the bud

7.Remove the plastic

8.Budding is complete and ready

2
to plant.

Marcotting- a method that allows the stem to develop roots while still on mother plant.
Steps in marcotting.
1. Choose the branch. 2. Set the cuts in the bark of a branch. 3. Scrape

4.Apply soil/coconut dust 5. Secure plastic and with soil/coconut dust and husk

sphagnum moss.

6. Tie the plastic 7. Harvest and Plant the Air Layered Plants

Cleft Grafting- a method where in the union of a scion from a mature plant
and a stock
from a seedling of same plant family, allows the growth of a new plant.

Steps in grafting.

1. Choose the rootstock

2. Remove
the leaves
of thescion
and the
rootstock
3. Cut off the top of the rootstock and slit it to form a cleft.

4. Make a wedge – shaped cut to the scion.

5. Insert the scion into the cleft of the rootstock. Make sure that the cambium
layers are compatible or fitted

6. Lastly, cover the scion and some part of the rootstock with ice bag and tie
the joint tightly with scotch tape. After a week the scion begins to grow if it
is successful but if it is not no bud will come

3
In plant propagation we also need the tools and equipment in applying the
scientific processes. Can you name them?
Here are the scientific ways of caring orchard trees and seedlings.
Watering the plants is essentially for plant growth and survival. Plants can
adapt to any environmental factors but without water it will die. However, too
much water can also be harmful. Plants grow healthy when properly watered.

A. Proper ways of watering the plants.

1. Natural- this is nature’s way of providing water for plants through the rain.
2. Manual- this is with the used of water pail and dipper or water sprinkler.
3. Artificial- water supply is artificially produced from the deep wells,
dumps, and rivers with the use of motors.
Surface or furrow irrigation - water is distributed to each row so it is
applicable only for row crops with uniform slope.
Sprinkler irrigation - this includes the line, rotating, and micro sprinklers in
which artificial rain is generated through special devices that wet the entire field.
Drip or trickle irrigation - a special water source design to discharge water
close to plant, wetting only that area and leaving the rest day.
Sub-irrigation - this type of irrigation is very expensive because the water
source is under the ground.

B. Proper Ways of Cultivation

Cultivating the land is practiced. It helps promote the growth of the roots and improve
aeration for fast absorption of nutrients by soil.
There are two ways soil cultivation:
1. Off-barring- cultivating the soil in rows.
2. Hilling-up- cultivating the soil towards the base of the plant.
C. Preparing and Applying Organic Fertilizer
Fertilizer is any substance added to the soil that promotes the healthy growth of the
plants.
Two classification of fertilizers:
1. Inorganic - artificial fertilizer made from chemicals (liquid,
soluble and granular form)
2. Organic - natural fertilizer from decayed matter, animals, and other
natural sources.
3.
Let’s Apply (Exercises)
A. Directions: Identify the correct tool and equipment based on the
given uses from the options below.

4
1. Use for cutting tall grasses, weeds and chopping branches of trees
______2. Use to water seedlings and young plants
3. Use to move trash, manures, fertilizers and transferring other materials to another
place
4. Use for cutting, scraping, slicing plants parts
5. Use in removing trash, digging loose soil from one place to another
B. Directions: Draw a smiley face if you observe healthy and safety measures
in propagating fruit-
bearing trees and draw a sad face if not.
1. Take a bath first before going to work so that you can work well
2. Always wear your personal protective equipment (PPE) while working
3. Make sure that the tools and equipment are not working properly
4. Always not following the instructions for the use of the tools and equipment
5. Do not allow yourself to get distracted. Focus on the work at hand

Let’s Analyze

Answer the question. Write your answer in the blank

1.What is the natural way of watering the

plants?__________________________________________________________________
2.What are the two ways of soil cultivation?
__________________________________________________________________
3.What are two classification of fertilizers?

Let’s Try (Evaluation/Assessment)

Directions: Arrange the following steps in Marcotting by writing numbers 1 for
the first step 2 for the second and so on.
