EXPERIMENT 2

CALIBRATION OF AMMETER
AIM:
To calibrate the given Ammeter using Ohm’s Law.

PRINCIPLE:
Calibration of Ammeter is done based on the principle of Ohm’s Law. Ohm's law states that the
current through a conductor between two points is directly proportional to the voltage across the
two points.
V = IR or I = V/R

APPARATUS REQUIRED:
DC Power Supply, Ammeter (0-30mA), Resistor (1KΩ), Bread board and connecting wires.

THEORY:
 Calibration is the act of comparing a device under test of an unknown value with a
reference standard of a known value
 It is performed to determine the error or verify the accuracy of the device under test’s
unknown value.
 It quantifies and controls errors or uncertainties within measurement processes to an
acceptable level.
 An Ammeter is a measuring instrument used to measure the current in a circuit. This has
to be calibrated in order for it to work properly.

PROCEDURE:
Calibration of Ammeter:
 An Ammeter of range 0-30 mA, 1kΩ resistor and a DC power supply unit (0-
30V) is taken.
 The positive of the DC power supply and one end of the resistor are connected in
series in the bread board. The other end of the resistor is connected in series to the
positive of the Ammeter.
 Similarly, the negative of the DC power supply and the Ammeter are connected in
series in the bread board.
 The power supply is switched on and the voltage is set. This is denoted as V.
Theoretical value of current is calculated from the given power supply volt and
1kΩ resistor as I=V/R
 The corresponding reading in the Ammeter is taken and is denoted as I’. If the
Ammeter is calibrated properly, it’ll show the same value set in the power supply.
 The experiment is repeated for different voltage values by adjusting the power
supply.
 The error% is calculated for all the readings.

EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATION
Calibration of Ammeter:

S. No. Power Supply Theoretical value Given Ammeter reading Error%

V (Volt) I = V/R mA I’ (mA) (I’-I)/I x 100
Where, R=1KΩ
1 2 2 1.8 10
2 4 4 3.5 12.5
3 6 6 5.5 8.3
4 8 8 7.5 6.25
5 10 10 9 10
6 12 12 11.3 5.8
7 14 14 13.4 4.2
8 16 16 15.5 3.1
9 18 18 17.3 3.8
10 20 20 19.5 2.5
Sample Calculation
For V=2V, I=V/R = 2/ 1kΩ = 2x10-3 = 2mA
Error% = (I’-I)/I x 100 = (1.8-2)/2 x 100 = 10%

RESULT: Thus the given ammeter is calibrated and the error% is calculated
