INPUT

Hello, Researchers! Before we start our weekly lessons, I would like to say good morning/good
afternoon.

So what are you waiting for, let's get started!

What I am going to discuss today is about Inquiry and Investigations.

To start this weekly lesson, answer the pre-activity below.

What is RESEARCH? Identify as many ideas as you can, anything that you can associate with
the word research. Write the first six words that come to your mind.

GUESS WHAT

Focused Discussion

In line with our objectives, the first lesson we will discuss is about the meaning of research.
So, what is research?

Research is defined as the creation of new

knowledge and/or the use of existing
knowledge in a new and creative way so as
to generate new concepts, methodologies
and understandings. This could include
synthesis and analysis of previous research
to the extent that it leads to new and
creative outcomes.

This definition of research is consistent with a broad notion of research and experimental
development (R&D) as comprising of creative work undertaken on a systematic basis in order to
increase the stock of knowledge, including knowledge of humanity, culture and society, and the
use of this stock of knowledge to devise new applications.

This definition of research encompasses pure and strategic basic research, applied research and
experimental development. Applied research is original investigation undertaken to acquire new
knowledge but directed towards a specific, practical aim or objective (including a client-driven
purpose).

After knowing what research is, let us familiarize ourselves with the research methodology.

The research methodology section of a

research project serves to explain how
the researcher is going to solve the
problem presented or prove the
hypothesis that is put forth. Often times,
there are several hypotheses and the
methodology will have to be a complex
mix of approaches in order to collect the
correct data.
Keep in mind that the research
methodology is the scientific portion of
the study undertaken. It is analytical in
nature and usually based on a
quantifiable and testable theory. It is
systematic and exact; therefore it
employs specific methods that are
universally recognized as legitimate ways
to test that which has not yet been
proven.

In a dissertation, thesis, academic journal article or pretty much any formal piece of research, you
will find a research methodology chapter or section which covers the aspects mentioned above.
Importantly, a good methodology chapter in a dissertation or thesis explains not just what
methodological choices were made, but also explains why they were made. In other words, the
methodology chapter should justify the design choices, by showing that the chosen methods and
techniques are the best fit for the research aims and objectives, and will provide valid and reliable
results. A good research methodology provides scientifically sound findings, whereas a poor
methodology does not.

And now, let us understand how to formulate research problems. That will be the last point of
discussion for this Suhay.

Before you start any form of study, get a clear
understanding of what a research problem is and learn to
formulate it properly. After defining it, you can start writing
your paper. It means that research problems or questions
are the fuel driving the entire scientific process and they
serve as the foundation of any experimental design or
method, from case studies to real experiments.
Why does it matter to researchers? It is an important
problem that you state in your research paper to define
your specific study area and provide a brief synopsis of
how you develop a hypothesis. The quality of a research problem defines your success.

What is a research problem?

A research problem is a statement about an area of concern, a condition to be improved, a

difficulty to be eliminated, or a troubling question that exists in scholarly literature, in theory, or in
practices, that points to the need for meaningful understanding and deliberate investigation. In
some social science disciplines, the research problem is typically posed in the form of a question.

The purpose of a problem statement is

to:
 introduce the reader to the
importance of the topic being
studied. The reader is oriented to
the significance of the study and the
research questions or hypotheses
to follow.
 place the problem into a particular
context that defines the parameters
of what is to be investigated.
 provides the framework for
reporting the results and to indicate
what is probably necessary to
conduct the study and explain how
the findings will present this
information.
See this example of a research problem.

And that will be the end of your lesson for this Suhay. For your activity, refer to Task 1.

TASK 1
From the current situation that we are facing right now, think critically and formulate three research
problems based on what you have learned in your Suhay. Write your objectives for those research
problems you made. See the criteria below for your guide. Write this activity on a separate paper,
then attach it to your Suhay.

ESSENTIALUNDERSTANDING

 Research is therefore, a systematic inquiry in order to understand a phenomenon.

 A researcher conducts a systematic study of the theories and the facts to answer the
different questions about the social reality. To answer the research question, a researcher
must apply and use the most appropriate technique or methodology to address the
problem.
 Research encourages you to find the most recent information available. In certain fields,
especially scientific ones, there are always new information and discoveries being made.
Staying updated prevents you from falling behind and giving info that is inaccurate or does
not paint the whole picture. With the latest information, you will be better equipped to talk
about a subject and build on ideas.
