QUESTIONS

1. ) A semispherical (hemispherical)
object with a radius of 6 m is
submerged in water as shown in the
figure. The object is hinged at
point A and stable on the water
surface.

The specific weight of the water is

9,79 kN/m3.

Calculate the mass of the

semispherical object.

2. ) In the tank-pipe system, water flows

steadily with a velocity of 2 m/s
from the large tank.

Determine the depth, H, of the layer

of oil that covers the water in the
tank.

𝛾 = 9,79 𝑘𝑁⁄𝑚

𝛾 = 7,857 𝑘𝑁⁄𝑚

3. ) a) What will happen to the lungs of a diver diving 10 meters deep in a lake?
Explain your reasoning.
b) In a facility where jars are being filled with honey, would you want the
temperature to be 10 degrees or 25 degrees? Explain your reasoning.
c) Automobile tire pressure must be measured after your vehicle has been sitting
for a few hours, and before you start driving. This is necessary to get the
most accurate reading. Explain this situation using your fluid mechanics
knowledge.

4.) L-shaped gate is hinged at point A. The gate is

balanced with a cubic object that is fully immersed in
water as shown on the right-hand side of the figure.
The volume of the cubic object is given as 5 m3.

a) What should be the mass of this cubic object to

keep the gate at balance? (20 P)
b) Calculate the specific mass of the material
that the cubic object is made of. (5 P)
c) Calculate the specific weight of the material
that the cubic object is made of. (5 P)

Assume that the width of the gate (into the paper) is

1 m.

𝛾 = 9,79 𝑘𝑁⁄𝑚 𝐼 . sin 𝜃

ℎ = +ℎ
ℎ .𝐴

𝑏. ℎ
𝐼 =

5.)
Total solid concentration of water in Pipe-1 is
given as 250 mg/L and the flowrate of this pipe
is 10 L/s. BOD concentration of water in Pipe-2
is 100 mg/L and the flowrate is unknown.

Water from Pipe-1 and Pipe-2 mixes at the

junction and gives a BOD concentration of 150
mg/L in Pipe-3.

a) Calculate the flowrate of Pipe-2. (10 P)

b) If the maximum velocity allowed in Pipe-
3 is 1,70 m/s, what should be the
minimum diameter of this pipe? (10 P)
