About IBA: Degree Requirements
The Institute of Business Administration (IBA), University of Dhaka, is the pioneer of business education in Bangladesh. It is
also the leading business school in the country. Commitment to the highest educational standards distinguishes IBA among the
educational institutes in Bangladesh. This reputation has been achieved through a tradition of excellence and dedication to quality
education and research. IBA graduates are highly sought after by the industry and IBA is proud of its students who have made
outstanding contributions to various fields, both at home and abroad.
IBA was founded in 1966 in collaboration with Indiana University, Bloomington, USA, under a Ford Foundation Financial
Assistance Program with the objective of providing professional training to create future business leaders. The founder-director
of IBA is Professor M. Shafiullah.
IBA began its journey by launching its flagship MBA program. In 1970s, the M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs were introduced. In
response to the growing demand for business education at the undergraduate level, the BBA program was started in 1993. In
2007, the Executive MBA program has been launched to meet the huge demand for quality education among executives.
In a proud history spanning more than four decades, the teachers and students of IBA have partnered together to achieve a level
of excellence still unmatched in Bangladesh. A variety of factors have contributed to its success, some of which are:
Incomplete grade
For incomplete course work, a student may be assigned the grades of 'Incomplete',
which will be recorded as 'I' with an alternative grade based on the work completed
up to that point in time. The alternative grade will come into effect if the student fails
to complete the course requirement. A student will be allowed to complete an
incomplete course within four weeks from the date of publication of the results. A
student who fails to complete the course work will automatically get the alternative
grade earned by him. In case no alternative grade is given then the 'I' will be
replaced by an 'F' grade after four weeks.
Repeating a Course
A course may be taken only once for a grade, except when a student receives a
failing grade which is recorded as 'F'. Since passing of all courses individually is a
degree requirement, the student must retake a failing course when offered, and
must successfully complete the course. The grade earned on the retake will be
shown in the transcript along with 'F' grade earned in the first time the course was
taken. But the grade earned on the course(s) repeated will be substituted for 'F' in
computing the CGPA. A course may be retaken only once.
Academic Standing of a Student
A student to remain in good standing must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.50. The
GPA or CGPA will be calculated on the basis of the number of courses completed,
including the course(s) in which the student has received an "F" grade, until he/she
repeats the course and the "F" grade is substituted by a passing grade.
Probation and Dismissal
If a student fails to maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.50 at the end of a semester, but
obtains 2.00 or more, he/she will be placed on probation. A student obtaining a
CGPA of less than 2.00 shall be dismissed from the program. If a student on
probation fails to raise his/her CGPA to 2.50 in the following semester he/she will be
dismissed from the program.
Withdrawal from the Semester
Withdrawal from a course may be allowed to a student with good standing during a
semester but within four weeks from the beginning of a semester. A student with
good standing only will be allowed to apply for withdrawal from the program. Those
who have incomplete grades will not be permitted to take withdrawal. The academic
committee may allow withdrawal on other occasions but a student must complete
the program within a period of 8 academic years from the date of initial registration.
Upon re-entry, the student must complete the required courses of the program
remaining in force. The student can only be accommodated within the course offered
for the regular students.
Comprehensive Examination
The Comprehensive examination evaluates the academic competence of the students
in the chosen area of concentration. A student must obtain at least 60% marks in
this examination to become eligible for the EMBA degree. The grade earned in the
comprehensive examination is recorded in the grade sheet of the student but not
considered in calculating the CGPA.
The comprehensive examination is usually taken two weeks before the end of the
final semester in which the student is to complete the fifteenth course. Failure in the
comprehensive examination calls for a retake, which is allowed only once, unless
otherwise decided by the Academic Committee. Such retake will be held in the
semester following the graduation of the batch to which the student belongs.
Grievance Procedure Regarding Grades
If a student is aggrieved by the evaluation and grading of academic work by his/her
teacher, s/he may file a grievance application as per approved procedure of the IBA.
Unfair Means
The following would be considered as unfair means adopted during examinations and
other contexts:
a) Communicating with fellow students for obtaining help
b) Copying from another student's script/report/paper
c) Copying from desk, or palm of a hand, or from other documents
d) Possession of any incriminating document whether used or not
e)Any approach, direct or indirect, to influence the teacher for a grade, and
f) Unruly behavior, which disrupts the academic program.
If a student is found to be adopting unfair means by the course teacher, he/she may
be given an 'F' grade at the discretion of the teacher for part of the course or in its
entirety.
Adoption of unfair means may result in the dismissal of a student from the
program and expulsion of the student from the Institute and as such from
the University.

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) program is a professional graduate
program to develop skills and judgement in an individual for effective management.
The emphasis is on the developing a student's ability to evaluate business and
organizational situations so as to enable him to make informed and creative
judgement about policy and operations. Central to this approach is the development
of creativity and judgement in students, so essential to every manager regardless of
functional area or level within an organization. A unique educational approach is used
to groom the graduates who enter the university from diversified academic
backgrounds. We initiate an active learning process so that the potential business
executives can work in their specialized areas armed with the necessary tools of
conceptual, interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Within the two years of grueling
work of absorbing theoretical knowledge and consequently applying these in a
practical orientation within the classroom, the graduates are fully equipped to work-
effectively and efficiently-under any business situation with different people and
different responsibilities.
The MBA program begins with a sequence of fundamental management courses, and
is followed by a range of elective courses, which provide opportunities for focusing in
particular disciplinary areas. This is given in two separate modes, full-time in the day
and part -time in the evening. Full-time students normally complete the course work,
followed by an internship program, in a maximum of six successive semesters. Part-
time students complete the course, followed by an internship, in an average of
eleven regular semesters.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
The admission policy provides a framework for the selection of students to the MBA
program on a competitive basis of past academic records, and performances in the
admission test (or GMAT for Foreign Nationals) plus an interview.
APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY
All applicants must have at least a Bachelor degree in any field of study. The minimum
qualifying point is seven for all applicants. The point determination is laid out in the tables

the five best grades for O Level and the two best grades for A-Level.
For all other certificates equivalence will be determined by the Equivalence Committee of
IBA.
Foreign Nationals with a score of 550 or more in GMAT (with minimum 30 percentile in
verbal and 50 percentile in quantitative) may be exempted from the Written Test. However,

Class Attendance
A student must attend all the classes of each enrolled course during a semester. Only three
absences, per course, per semester may be excused. A student may be given a reduced or
a "F" grade or dismissed from the program for unexcused absences. However, any proposal
for dismissal of students for unexcused absences shall be reviewed and considered by the
Academic Committee of the IBA for a final decision.
Course Load
Part-time students
A part-time studentshould enroll for3 courses infirst semester. From the second
semester onwards, a part-time student may take a minimum of 2 courses per semester.
He / she may also change status from part-time to full-time. In this case, he /she will have
to fulfill the course load as a full time student.
Change of such status will be allowed only if the student has good standing in terms of
CGPA. Written approval of the MBA Program Office is required for such a change.
Course Offerings
All the courses are not offered every semester. Core courses normally require a minimum of
15 students. Major courses may require a minimum of 6 students.
Grading System
Letter grades are used to evaluate the course performance and other works of a student in
a course of which A, B+, B, C+, C, D+ and D are considered passing grades. 'F' is the failing
grade. The numerical equivalence of the grades as used by the Institute in calculating CGPA
are as follows:
Incomplete grade
For incomplete course work a student may be assigned the grades of 'Incomplete', which
will be recorded as 'I' with an alternative grade based on the work completed at that point
in time. The alternative grade will come into effect if the student fails to complete the
course requirement. A student will be allowed to complete an incomplete course within four
weeks from the date of publication of the results. A student who fails to complete the course
work will automatically get the alternative grade earned by him.
Repeating a Course
A course may be taken only once for a grade, except when a student receives a failing
grade which is recorded as 'F'. Since passing of all courses individually is a degree
requirement, the student must retake a failing course when offered, and must successfully
complete the course. The grade earned on the retake will be shown in the transcript along
with 'F' grade earned in the first time the course was taken. But the grade earned on the
course(s) repeated will be substituted for 'F' in computing the CGPA. A course can be
retaken only once.
Withdrawal
Withdrawal from a course may be allowed to a student with good standing during a
semester but within six weeks from the beginning of a semester. A student with good
standing only will be allowed to apply for withdrawal from the program. Those who have
incomplete grades will not be permitted withdrawal. The academic committee may allow
withdrawal on other occasions but a student must complete the program within a period of
8 academic years from the date of initial registration. Upon re-entry, the student must
complete the required courses of the program remaining in force. The student can only be
accommodated within the course offered for the regular students.
Comprehensive Examination
The Comprehensive examination evaluates the academic competence of the students in the
chosen area of concentration. A student must obtain at least a passing grade ('C') in this
examination to become eligible for the MBA degree. The grade earned in comprehensive
examination is recorded in the grade sheet of the student but not included in the CGPA.
The comprehensive examination is usually taken two week before the end of the semester
in which the student is to complete the twentieth course. Failure in the comprehensive
examination calls for a retake, which is allowed only once, unless otherwise decided by the
Academic Committee. Such retake will be held in the semester following the graduation of
the batch to which the student belongs.
Internship Program
The internship is part of the MBA degree requirement. A student must complete other
degree requirements before placement in the internship program. The internship constitutes
a practicum for a student and is a preparatory step towards a career. The primary goal of
internship is to provide an on-the-job exposure to the student and an opportunity for
translation of theoretical concepts to real life situation. Internships are held in public/private
sectors, research institutions and developmental agencies. The program covers a semester
equivalent of 16 weeks with 12 weeks of organizational attachment and 4 weeks of report
finalization. The internship program is usually organized to match the area of concentration
of a student and is supervised by a faculty.
In all cases a student is required to prepare an internship report within the time prescribed.
The internship report of a student will be graded as per normal grading system of IBA. The
passing grade in the internship is 'C'. Failure to obtain a passing grade will call for redoing
the internship program and is allowed only once. The grade earned on the internship report
is recorded in the grade sheet of the student but excluded from the CGPA calculation.
