INTRODUCTION TO
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
Activity Sheet

General Instruction
1. Watch the video about the Introduction to Environmental Science at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7G3eXI_DPn8&t=332s.
2. As you watch the video, jot down notes all the important concepts you come across (that will
serve as your lecture and reference.
3. Do the following tasks.

Tasks
1. Make a Concept Map about the short video you watched. Follow the steps on how to create a concept
map in the Hand-Out I uploaded in our Google Classroom.
2. You can either make a concept map electronically (in your laptop) or manually through hand
written. If you wish to do it manually in a blank sheet of paper, scan your Concept Map using the
Adobe Scanner that I require you to install. Save it as JPEG, and paste or insert it here. Make
sure that your hand written concept map is readable.

3. Briefly answer the following questions:

1. What are the two components of the environment? Give examples.

1. Abiotic Components
- Abiotic components of an ecosystem consist of the nonorganic aspects of the
environment that determine what life forms can thrive
Examples of Biotic components are:
Temperature, Average humidity, Topography and Natural disturbances.
2. Biotic Components
- The biotic components of an ecosystem are the life forms that inhabit.
Examples of Biotic components are:
Water, Light, Wind, Soil, Humidity, Minerals, Gases.

2. Why do we need to study Environmental Science?

- We need to study the environment and the sciences applied into it to find
solutions to different environment we still have now. If man will only make use of
the different discoveries through environment science, then this world will definitely
be a better place to be called home not only for us but for the next generation.

3. What do you call the chemical process of producing food in plants?

- Photosynthesis

4. What are the four spheres of the Earth?

1. The Lithosphere
- contains all the cold, hard solid land of the planet’s crust (surface), the
semi-solid land underneath the crust, and the liquid land near the center of the
planet.
2. The Hydrosphere
- contains all the solid, liquid, and gaseous water of the planet.
3. The Biosphere
- contains all the planet’s living things.
4. The Atmosphere
- contains all the air in Earth’s system.

5. What is Natural Resources? Give examples.

- Natural resources are the materials which are required for the survival and
prosperity of human beings.
Examples of natural resources are:
Water, Oil, Air, Stone, Sunlight, Plants, Animals, and Fossil fuels.

6. What human activity causes the imbalance of the four spheres?

- Humans have a huge impact on all spheres. Negative impacts, such as burning fossil
fuels, pollute the atmosphere. Piling up our waste in landfills affects the geosphere.
Pumping waste into the oceans harms the hydrosphere. And overfishing and habitat
destruction can reduce the diversity of living things in the biosphere. However,
people everywhere are working to change things. Recycling efforts are increasing all
over the world, and companies are finding new ways to reduce fossil fuels. In the
US alone, people are recycling six times more than a generation ago.

7. What are the environmental issues mentioned in the video?

- Climate change
- Ozone depletion
- Global warming
- Natural disasters
- Earthquake
- Tsunami
- Cyclonic storm
- Typhoon
