PART – B

1. What is triple Point?

Triple point is the state at where all the three phases, i.e, solid, liquid, and vapour
to exist in equilibrium

2. What is the difference between saturated vapour and superheated vapour?

S.No saturated vapour superheated vapour

1 When water is heated at a specific If some more heat is added to this vapour at
pressure then it becomes vapour at a that specific pressure then it's temp
specific temperature that is known as Increases and the vapour is known as
saturation temp. And this vapour is superheated vapour
known as saturated vapour.

2 A small amount of heat loss from the In superheated condition a small amount of
vapor at saturated condition will cause heat loss or small decrease in temperature
the vapor to condense i.e., phase changes will not cause any phase change
from vapor to liquid

3. What is degree of superheat?

It is the difference between superheated temperature and saturated temperature at the same
temperature

4. Determine specific enthalpy and specific entropy of 1200 C saturated steam

From steam table at 1200 C, Specific Enthalpy, hg = 2706 KJ/Kg, Specific Entrolpy, S g
= 7.1293 KJ/KgK

5. Define specific steam consumption of an Rankine cycle

It is defined as the mass flow of steam required per unit power output.
𝑆𝑡𝑒𝑎𝑚 𝑓𝑙𝑜𝑤 𝑖𝑛 𝑘𝑔/ℎ𝑟
specific steam consumption = 𝑃𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 𝑖𝑛 𝐾𝑊
6. Sketch the flow diagram of rankine cycle indicating the main components

7. Define Latent heat of evaporization

The amount of heat added during heating of water from boiling point to dry saturated stage
is called as latent heat of vaporization or enthalpy of vaporization or latent heat of steam

8. Define the Boiling point and Melting point

Boiling point: It is the temperature at which the liquid starts to change its state from liquid
to vapour

Melting point: It is the temperature at which the solidd starts to change its state from solid
to liquid

9. Explain the terms Degree of super heat, Degree of subcooling

Degree of super heat: It is the difference between superheated temperature and
saturated temperature at the same temperature

Degree of subcooling: It is the amount by which the water is cooled beyond the
saturated temperature at the same pressure

10.Define dryness fraction of steam

It is defined as the ratio of the mass of the total steam actually present to the mass
of the total steam
𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑑𝑟𝑦 𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚𝑎
Dryness Fraction = 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑚𝑖𝑥𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒

2.Find the specific volume and specific enthalpy of steam at 9 bar, when condition of steam is i)
wet with dryness fraction 0.98 ii) dry saturated iii) superheated the temperature of steam 240 0 C
