3) Berthing Energy
Calculation of berthing energy is based on the following formula:

DT 2
Energy = × v × Ce × Cm × Cs (kN-m)
2

Where, DT : Displacement tonnage (ton)

v : Berthing speed (m/s)
g : Acceleration of gravity (9.807 m/s2)
Ce : Eccentricity coefficient
Cm : Mass coefficient
Cs : Softness coefficient

Ce can be derived with the following formula:

2
l 
1 +   Sin 2 θ
Ce = r
2
l 
1+  
r

Where, l = distance from the centre of gravity of the vessel to the point of contact
projected along the waterline of the berth (P-CG in above figure)
r = radius of gyration of rotational radius on the plane of the vessel from its
centre of gravity
Where, r = (0.19·Cb + 0.11)·Lpp

Cm is given by formula below:

2d
Cm = 1 + for broadside berthing
B

When vessel which has a length much greater than its beam or draft, generally for
vessel with displacement tonnage greater than 20,000, the additional weight may be
approximated to the weight of a cylindrical column of water of height equal to the
length of vessel and diameter equal to the draft of vessel, then

π
d 2 L pp w
Cm = 1 + 4
( DT )

Where w = unit weight of water (1.025 tonnes/m2 for sea water)
