1. Data types and levels of measurement

Given three variables A, B and C. Below these variables you find a question about these
variables.

A. The type of aircraft that is used on a flight from Amsterdam to Berlin.


B. The temperature measured in °C
C. The time that second year students aeronautical engineering spent on preparing for
the statistics examination, categorized per 5 hours.

a. For each of the variables (A, B, and C) write down the level of measurement, choose
between nominal/ordinal/ratio/interval.

b. Give a similarity and a difference for the levels of measurement nominal and ordinal.

2. Categorizing data

Table 1 below shows 44 measurements of the number of orders at a distribution center per
day. The values in the table are arranged in order of magnitude.

3. Measures of central tendency and measures of variability

The frequency table below (table 2) shows the weight W measured in kg of 120 checked in
suitcases. The data is grouped in 6 categories.

b. Find the standard deviation (2 d.p.). Do not round intermediate answers.
c. Find the percentage of suitcases with a weight within the 2s interval (2 d.p.).
d. What percentage of measurements are within the 1s, 2s and 3s interval if data is
(approximately) normally distributed?

4. Bicycle repairer

A bicycle repairer carries out different types of maintenance on bicycles. At the end of a
working day she has 1 hour left. There is 1 bicycle that needs to be repaired. For this repair
three different tasks need to be done. These tasks are labeled A, B and C. The time in
minutes needed to complete these tasks is normally distributed: A = ℕ(5 ; Ω), B = ℕ(15 ;
2.2) and C = ℕ(35 ; 3.5).

Ω is determined by the fourth digit (***X**) of your student number:

a. Find the probability that the bicycle repairer is able to complete these 3 tasks within 60
minutes.

Because this combination of maintenance task occurs frequently the bicycle repairer wants
to know with more certainty that the combination of task A, B and C can be completed within
60 minutes. She would like that the probability that this takes less than 60 minutes is 0.9830.
To make this happen she wants to reduce the mean time of task B.

b. Find the mean time of task B (2 d.p.) such that the probability that completing task A, B
and C within 60 minutes is equal to 0.9830.

Task A is takes very few time. The bicycle repairer is curious about the probability of his task
being completed between 5 and 6 minutes.

c. Find the probability that completing task A takes between 5 and 6 minutes.

Because task C takes a long time the bicycle repairer is interested in the 95% time interval of
this task.

d. Find the 95% time interval of task C (2 d.p.).

5. Park and Ride

A Park and Ride next to a large city has 400 parking spots. Every parking spot is occupied
90% of the time.

Because of a company day-out at a certain moment 20 cars want to park at the same time.

a. Find the probability that out of the 400 parking spots a minimum of 20 is free. Use the
normal approximation with continuity correction.

Ψ is determined by the fifth digit (****X*) of your student number:
