Food Web Activity: Who Gets eaten by What?

Wetland Food web: You have to figure out what each living thing (given below) eats and then draw arrows
to show what ends up in whose mouth. Remember that each living thing can be eaten by more than one
thing. You can take a picture of each organism on the internet.

Biotic:

Water ribbons duck lizard

Algae pelican swamp hen

Frog black swan fish

Heron tortoise freshwater snail

Bulrushes diving beetle reeds

Mosquito dragonfly larvae dragonfly

Yabby water boatman mosquito larvae

Choose only 2 situations and explain: Predict what will happen to the organism if:

a) an oil spill occurred nearby

b) several house owners nearby fertilized their lawns followed by a big rain

c) all the fish were killed

d) the weather is warmer than usual and less rainfall.

Predict what will happen to the organism if:

c) all the fish were killed

If all the fish were killed, then the life as we know it will cease to exist. This prediction is horrifying,
but there is certainly credibility behind it. The lack of fish in the ocean does not simply mean that important
source of foods is gone. Rather it will mean that our world will undergo dramatic changes. Fish is the main
food source for people who are unable to afford chicken and red-meat. Fish play a far more important role
as contributors of nutrients to marine ecosystems. Without them, the life as we know it will not be possible.
The ocean will no longer be able to perform many of its essential functions in our ecosystems. It can lead
our life in lower quality. These effects of a world without fish in the ocean would be felt by everyone.

d) the weather is warmer than usual and less rainfall.

If the weather is warmer than usual, higher temperatures may be suitable for reproduction and can
rapidly increase the number of organisms such as algae and large invertebrates, but warmer water affects
the amount of dissolved oxygen in water. If the weather is warmer than usual and less rainfall, it simply
means that the moist air produces many small droplets instead of some large droplets. These droplets do
not grow large enough to sink in the air, so clouds last longer and drizzle less. The warmer weather can
affect the water temperature during heat waves that contributes to the deterioration of water quality and
adversely affects the number of fish. It can also lead to the death of many organisms in the aquatic
ecosystem. Also associated with the growth of rampant algae, leading to mass mortality of fish in rivers and
lakes.
