Purpose:
The purpose of this report is to provide a comprehensive record of a 'Rack Safety Inspection' which confirms to guide
lines outlined in SEMA (Storage Equipment Manufacturers Association) for the use of static pallet racking.

Scope of Inspection:
 Visual Examination: Assessment of damage to rack components such as uprights, bracing members,
beams, base plates, floor fixing, column guards etc.
 Review of Load Notices
 Witness of Load Testing Exercise: Random Location.
 Report of finding with recommendation.

Definitions:

Drive In System:

 In this system, the Stacker / reach truck drives in to a bay and reverses.

Drive through System:

 In this system, the stacker / reach truck may drive through the block from one aisle to another.

PALLET RACKING INSPECTION

Bay:

 A module between frames on the access faces.

Bin:

 Another name of Pallet

Levels:

 Number of storage levels in the height.

Aisle:

 The access space to a block face.

Gangway:

 Space for movement of reach truck / stacker but not given direct access to picking or loading face.

Block:

 Consists of a number of connected bays.

Criteria of Acceptance / Rejection:

Green Zone:
The damages measured are within the damage limits, so these damages are considered as non-critical,
which should be reviewed at next inspection.

Orange Zone:
This zone means that the measured & observed items are beyond the acceptable limits but immediate
off loading of the rack is not needed. Once the rack is unloaded it should not be re- loaded until the repairs have been
carried out. That mean racking with orange risk becomes red risk once the rack unloaded.

Red Zone:
The damages measured are exceeding the damage limits the racking must be off-loaded immediately
and isolated from future use until repair work is carried out. It’s not recommended to repair damaged components. The
damaged components should be replaced with new member/component.

Load test:

 Beam Deflection Allowable Limit: 2300/200 = 11.5mm


 Load test exercise: Load test performed at 2450 kg/beam maximum load available at site.
 Observed deflection of beam under 2450 kg/beam load: 10 ~11mm
 Observed deflection of beam under 2000 kg/beam load: 05 ~ 06 mm
 Upright Plumbness Allowable Limit: 11500/300 = 38 mm
 Observed Plumbness at Rack # 01 and Rack # 04 =80 mm and 150 mm

General Observations / Recommendations:

It is recommended; all findings should be rectified / replaced as per SEMA’s given requirements.

 Manufacturing data was available.

 According to drawing variation observed between beam to beam height.

 Plumbness of R-01 And R-04 were observed out of tolerance.

 Beams end connectors R2 – 11B and R4 – 26B were observed to be damage.

 Ties should be installed to building according to manufacturer’s specifications to control verticality.

 Nominal Clearance between Pallets/ Load to Beam and upright was observed insufficient.

 Pallet support bar was not found, should be installed.

 Load Notice (as per manufacturer) need to be displayed permanently in front of every rack.

 Safety signs (etc. MHE’s / Stackers.) And stacking features need to be displayed in warehouse for safe use.

 In Rack 01 right upright and Rack 04 left upright no. 26 were observed tilted sideway, must be maintained.

 Concave/Convex mirrors need to be installed on front of aisles.

General Guidelines:

 Manufacturer drawings should be available, so that inspection activities performed according to general survey

guideline given by “SEMA” in regard to verify the stability of pallets rack.

 Manufacturers Load Notice should be available for safe use of rack.

(Reference SEMA Guideline: “4.2 Load Notice: The supplier should provide a load notice for the racking system. The

notice should indicate the max. Unit loads and should be displayed permanently in the warehouse”).

 Beams end connectors R2 – 11B and R4 – 26B were observed to be damage.

 (Reference SEMA Guideline: “7.9” Beam End connectors Damage”),

 Overall Base plate bolts should be properly fixed.

(Reference SEMA Guideline: “7.16 Base Plate Inspection: All base plates bolts on storage system, which are subject to

loading or unloading by mechanical handling equipment, should be fixed to the floor slab with at least a single fixing bolt

and for gap used shims for proper placement”)

 Upright protectors should be installed. But for drive-In racking upright protector should also cover the base

plate.

Inspection”)

 Plumbness of R-01 And R-04 were observed out of tolerance.

 (Reference SEMA Guideline: “7.13” Upright Inspection of Verticality; For all Racks Installation the out of

verticality when Loaded should not exceed 1/300 . Any displacement in excess of this level should be

investigated.

 Ties should be installed to building according to manufacturer’s specifications to control verticality.

 Bay & Gang way floor should be in well condition.

(Reference SEMA Guideline: “3.5” Storage Area Flooring”)

 Nominal Clearance between Pallets/ Load to Beam and upright was observed insufficient.

Conclusion:

In the light of current inspection findings, all above subject racks are manufactured by Bari Engineering were

found Unsatisfactory regarding improper installation, load placement and load testing.

Criteria of Acceptance / Rejection

Green Zone Areas where is present, however, the level of damage is within the SEMA limits, so these damages are considered as non critical, but should be reviewed at next inspection.
