ASTM D6760
INTRODUCTION
Albatech Testing Services LLC (ALBATECH) has carried out Ultrasonic Crosshole Testing
on cast-in-situ concrete piles. ALBATECH personnel performed the data collection on site
and the analysis of results for the pile tested.
The purpose of the testing is to evaluate the homogeneity and relative integrity of the
concrete in a deep foundation. The test measures the wave propagation time and relative
energy of an ultrasonic pulse between parallel access ducts installed in the pile or structure.

CSL RATING
The rating of the concrete integrity considers the increases in “first arrival time” (FAT) and
the energy reduction relative to the arrival time or energy in a nearby zone of good concrete.
Our general rating criteria for CSL results are detailed below.
Satisfactory(S) FAT increase 0 to 10% and Energy Reduction < 6 db. Indicative of
good quality concrete.
Good (G) FAT increase 11 to 20% and Energy Reduction of < 9 db. Results
indicative of minor contamination or intrusion and/or questionable
quality concrete. Investigations of anomalies with 10% to 20%
reductions in velocity have identified sound concrete at some sites.
Poor/Flaw (P/F) FAT increase 21 to 30% or Energy Reduction of 9 to 12 db. Results
indicative of water slurry contamination or soil intrusion and flawed
concrete at others.
Poor/Defect (P/D) FAT increase >31% or Energy Reduction > 12 db. Results indicative
of water slurry contamination or soil intrusion and/or poor quality
concrete.

CSL RESULTS
The results of the CSL testing performed are summarized in the table below.
Anomalous Concrete Overall Concrete

CONCLUSION
The results for pile P1-1 indicate that the pile concrete is generally sound between tube
pairs. The overall condition of the concrete in the piles are acceptable with the majority of
the concrete being free from anomalies as shown in Crosshole Sonic Logs, Appendix A.
This report is prepared in general accordance with the guidelines presented in
ASTM D6760-16. The interpretations provided herein are made based on the information
available at the time of testing and subject to the limits of the test method and equipment.
This report does not claim to address all aspects of structural integrity or concrete condition.

CROSS HOLE SONIC LOGGING TEST METHOD
Test Overview
The cross-hole sonic logging method of pile integrity testing can detect defects within a piled
shaft. By sending ultrasonic pulses through concrete from one probe to another and
analyzing signals received in the form of pulse arrival time and signal strength, the
cross-hole logging procedure inspects the pile shaft for structural integrity
The test requires pre-installed tubes of a nominal 50mm internal diameter, cast into the pile
shaft. The number and configuration of the tubes is determined by the size of pile and the
test sequence required. This is normally taken as one tube for every 0.25 to 0.35m of shaft
diameter.
A transmitter lowered down one tube sends a high frequency signal, which is sensed at
some time later by the receiver in an adjacent tube. The sensors are then moved up the pile
shaft until the whole shaft has been scanned. The test is repeated for each pair of water
filled tubes, allowing for the investigation of defects, both along the length and by quadrant
The transmitter and receiver are attached to PVC cable. Each has its own depth encoder
allowing accurate depth measurements to be taken.
The system utilized by ALBATECH is the Cross Hole Analyzer (CHA) system from Pile
Dynamics Inc. This is a state-of-the-art MS Windows-based system ensuring the best
possible accuracy and reliability.
The CHA is easy to use and data interpretation is straightforward. The actual signal is
plotted as amplitude versus time for the indicated depth and the full signal is stored and
available for inspection. The user can compensate for excess noise or weak signal strength.
At the receiver probe, pulse arrival time (wave speed) and signal strength (relative energy)
are affected by the concrete quality between the probes. For equidistant tubes, uniform
concrete yields consistent arrival times and signal strengths.
By analysis of the signals obtained, the combination of weak signals in the relative energy
plot, delayed arrivals in the arrival time plot and missing signals in the traditional plot, it is
possible to detect defects such as contamination, soft or poor-quality concrete,
honeycombing, voids and inclusions.

CSL DATA REPORT
ASTM D6760
Preparation
Every pile that requires testing shall be equipped with access tubes to permit possible
inspection by cross-hole logging.
The access tubes shall be of a nominal 50 mm (2.0 inch) inside diameter standard weight
schedule 40 steel tubes for access for the probes in each drilled shaft. They shall be round
tubes that have a regular internal diameter free of defects and obstructions, including any
tube joints, to permit the free, unobstructed passage of the probes. Tubes shall be watertight
and free from corrosion with clean internal and external faces to ensure a good bond
between the concrete and the tubes. Tubes may be extended with mechanical couplings.
Tubes shall be installed by the Contractor such that the CSL probes will pass through the
entire length of the tube without binding. The access tubes should be plumb and parallel.
The tubes should be dipped along their full length to determine that the tubes are clear of
obstructions and to obtain the tube length prior to testing. The tubes should be full of water.
The tubes shall be referenced by the Contractor and details of cast date, bored and
concreted length should be made available to the test engineer.
Testing Procedure
The testing shall be performed with the transmitter and receiver probes in the same
horizontal plane in parallel tubes. Using the labeling established for the tubes, perform CSL
testing between all profiles required.
The probes shall be lowered from the top to the highest tip elevation of the tubes. The
probes are then pulled simultaneously, taking CSL measurements at intervals of 50 mm or
less from the bottom to the top of the drilled shaft. Any indication of anomalies indication
shall be immediately reported to the contractor. Additional tests such as the offset elevation
CSL testing may be required by the contractor to further evaluate the extent of such defects.
If de-bonding between the access tube and the concrete is indicated by the CSL results, an
alternative test method may be required to determine the integrity of the concrete in the
de-bonded region.
