Introduction to Computer Aided Design (CAD)

Computer-aided design (CAD) is the use of computers (or workstations) to aid in the creation,
modification, analysis, or optimization of a design.CAD software is used to increase the
productivity of the designer, improve the quality of design, improve communications through
documentation, and to create a database for manufacturing.CAD output is often in the form of
electronic files for print, machining, or other manufacturing operations. The term CADD (for
computer aided design and drafting) is also used.

Its use in designing electronic systems is known as electronic design automation (EDA). In
mechanical design it is known as mechanical design automation (MDA) or computer-aided
drafting (CAD), which includes the process of creating a technical drawing with the use of
computer software.

CAD software for mechanical design uses either vector-based graphics to depict the objects of
traditional drafting, or may also produce raster graphics showing the overall appearance of
designed objects. However, it involves more than just shapes. As in the manual drafting of
technical and engineering drawings, the output of CAD must convey information, such as
materials, processes, dimensions, and tolerances, according to application-specific conventions.

CAD may be used to design curves and figures in two-dimensional (2D) space; or curves,
surfaces, and solids in three-dimensional (3D) space.

CAD is an important industrial art extensively used in many applications, including automotive,
shipbuilding, and aerospace industries, industrial and architectural design, prosthetics, and
many more. CAD is also widely used to produce computer animation for special effects in
movies, advertising and technical manuals, often called DCC digital content creation. The
modern ubiquity and power of computers means that even perfume bottles and shampoo
dispensers are designed using techniques unheard of by engineers of the 1960s. Because of its
enormous economic importance, CAD has been a major driving force for research in
computational geometry, computer graphics (both hardware and software), and discrete
differential geometry.
Example of CAD software

▪ AutoCAD, 3ds Max, and Maya — commercial CAD software titles published
by Autodesk.

▪ Blender — an open-source CAD, animation, and image processing

application with an active community of users.

▪ SketchUp — a proprietary CAD application that runs in a web browser,

formerly developed by Google.
Introduction to Autodesk Autocad software

AutoCAD is a commercial computer-aided design (CAD) and drafting software

application. Developed and marketed by Autodesk,AutoCAD was first released in
December 1982 as a desktop app running on microcomputers with internal
graphics controllers. Before AutoCAD was introduced, most commercial CAD
programs ran on mainframe computers or minicomputers, with each CAD
operator (user) working at a separate graphics terminal.AutoCAD is also available
as mobile and web apps.AutoCAD is used in industry, by architects, project
managers, engineers, graphic designers, city planners and other professionals. It
was supported by 750 training centers worldwide in 1994.

AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT are available for English, German, French, Italian,
Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Brazilian
Portuguese, Russian, Czech, Polish and Hungarian (also through additional
language packs). The extent of localization varies from full translation of the
product to documentation only. The AutoCAD command set is localized as a part
of the software localization.Autodesk has also developed a few vertical programs
for discipline-specific enhancements such as:

• AutoCAD Advance Steel

• AutoCAD Architecture
• AutoCAD Electrical
• AutoCAD ecscad
• AutoCAD Map 3D
• AutoCAD Mech
• AutoCAD MEP
• AutoCAD Structural Detailing
• AutoCAD Utility Design
• AutoCAD P&ID
• AutoCAD Plant 3D
• Autodesk Civil 3D
OBJECTIVE
The objective of this course is to teach students the basic commands and tools
necessary for professional 2D and 3D drawing, design and drafting using AutoCAD
/ AutoCAD LT. After completing this report students will be able to:

▪ Use AutoCAD for daily working process.

▪ Navigate throughout AutoCAD using major navigating tools.
▪ Understand the concept and techniques to draw.
▪ Create multiple designs using several of tools.
▪ Create layers to control the objects visibility.
▪ Explain drawing using annotations.
▪ Plot or print the drawing by scale.
▪ To use constraint for certain design.
TECHNICAL DRAWING

EXPLANATION
1. Before starting the drawing use the STARTUP command and insert 1 for the
values and press enter. Then, start a new drawing and choose metric for the
unit.
2. Setup the layer for the drawing with different colours and line type
according to the type of the line by clicking the layer properties in the top
ribbon.
3. Build an intersecting line by using the line and offset command and also
make a 45 degrees line on top right area.
4. Start drawing the top view referring to the scale given and then project the
line from the top view drawing to the 45 degrees line for the side view and
front view.
5. For the ortographic drawing use the suitable command such as line and
circle by referring to the given scale.
6. To remove the excess line on the drawing use the trim command and press
enter.Click on the line that want to be remove.
7. Make the dimension for the drawing by referring the scale using the
dimensions command in the annotantions ribbon.
8. Set the line in the drawing according to the suitable layer. For
example, white and continuous line for the object line, red for dimension
and green for the center line.
9. For the isometric drawing type enter snap in the command for making a 3D
isometric drawing.
10.For drawing the isometric object, use the isoplane top, isoplane left and
isoplane right in the status bar in the right bottom of the screen.Use the
same scale and measurement in the ortographic drawing.
11.Use the suitable command for the isometric drawing such as line, ellipse in
the ribbon and for the circle hole on the object use the isocircle ellipse tool
in the ribbon.
12.After finished the drawing remove the excess line on the drawing to get the
same shape like in the picture given by using the trim command and press
enter.
13.Use the blue and continuous layer for the isometric drawing.
14.For the title block, draw an outer frame with scale 297.00 x 210.00 and build
inner frame 10.00 from the outer frame by using the line and offset
command.
15.To insert the drawing into the block,on the insert tab click block panel >
insert. Then, insert the name for the block and specify the insertion point
and click OK.Lastly, adjust the drawing and title block in the layout.

CONCLUSION
The conclusion is the main objective for the project has been achieved,
that is to draw the project using the basic commands and tools
necessary for professional 2D and 3D drawing, design and drafting
using AutoCAD.Students are able to draw based on the measurement
given by the lecturers. As example, students are able to create multiple
designs using several of tools ,create layers to control the objects
visibility and explain drawing using annotations. As the results, students
can understand the concept and techniques to draw. However, several
problems occur in the project but thankfully students overcame most of
it. Thus, the project literally trains the students to overcome obstacles
and solve them professionally.
