Reading
10. Read the article about Valentine’s Day.

A Day Valentine’s Day is when people express their love to

their sweethearts and get them gifts. I’ve been finding

of out a bit more about how it is celebrated in different

places as traditions can be very different from country

Love
to country.

There are many places where it isn’t on the calendar

of special occasions at all, or there may be just ‘a day
of love’ but on a different date. In Britain and the
USA Valentine’s Day is on 14 February, and the stores are filled with possible presents for
that someone special – red roses, cards decorated with lovehearts, boxes of chocolates,
and teddy bears.
Not everybody goes to the store to show their loved one how they feel. Traditions vary
around the world, from writing poems to attending music festivals. In South Korea,
if someone has nobody to express their love to on Valentine’s Day, they may meet
other lonely friends to eat black noodles. In Wales, they celebrate St Dwynwen’s Day on
25 January and the traditional romantic gift is a wooden spoon. This started in the 17th
century when men would make a spoon out of wood and cut shapes into the wood with
special meanings. Bells meant a wedding, and birds could mean ‘let’s fly away together’.
In South Africa they celebrate Valentine’s Day with festivals, flowers and gifts from the
stores, but they also do something special as well as buying gifts for each other. The
women put the names of their sweethearts on the sleeves of their clothes. This comes
from an old Roman tradition, and is a way for a man to find out if the woman he loves
also loves him.

Are the sentences True (T) or False (F)? If there isn’t enough information in the text,
write Doesn’t Say (DS).
0 Valentine’s Day is celebrated in every country in the world. F
1 Valentine’s Day is on 14 February in all the countries where it’s celebrated.
2 Shopping for gifts is part of Valentine’s Day traditions in the USA.
3 For some people, eating food together is an important way of showing love.
4 In Wales, wooden spoons are given to women as a way of showing love.
5 South African men buy clothes as gifts for the women they love.
