Volleyball
History
Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William J. Morgan in Holyoke, Massachusetts. He
developed the game to provide an indoor game for winter months in which large groups
of men could participate in a small gym.
Got the idea from tennis, but the net was raised, and the players struck the bladder of a
basketball with their hands instead of using racquets.
From 1964-1980, the Soviets and Japanese dominated the Olympics. The only year they
did not win a medal was in 180 when the Japanese boycotted the Olympics. In 1984 the
U.S. men’s team won gold and the U.S. women’s team won silver.
Today the game of volleyball requires team strategies involving offensive and defensive
plays and highly refined individual skills. Volleyball has become one of the most popular
sports in high school and college women’s athletic programs. The game is now played
on sand courts and beaches, played by 2 players only instead of 6.
Equipment
Volleyball- an inflated leather ball 25 5/8 inches (65cm) in circumference and weighs between
9-10 ounces.
Rectangular court divided by a tightly stretched net. Top of the net is 7 feet 11 5/8 inches from
the floor for men and for women it is 7 feet 4 1/8 inches.
A backcourt spiking line drawn across the court 9 feet 10 inches from parallel to centerline.
At a point 8 inches behind the perpendicular to each end line, two lines, 6 inches wide draw to
mark the service area for each team.
Rules
6 players on a team, 3 on the front row and 3 on the back row.
Maximum of three hits per side.
Player may not hit the ball twice in a row.
The ball may be played off the net during a volley and on a serve.
A ball hitting a boundary line is “in”
Officials and their duties: The first referee is the superior official and decides whether the ball is
in play or dead, and when a point or side-out is made. The second referee assists, but is
primarily responsible for net and centerline violations, supervision of substitutions. This referee
stands outside the court behind the standard, changing positions of the ball and should be
positioned as the ball changes on the side of the net opposite the ball.
Scoring
Failure of a team to return the ball legally over the net into the opponent’s court scores
1 point.
A match consists of three out of five games to 25 points with the fifth game to 15
points.
Some local rules may put a 17-point cap on the first four games. Sometimes the need to
win by 2 points is eliminated so a 17-16 score is possible.
Faults
1. Cannot catch the ball with hands.
2. A ball is considered out if it hits the antenna, outside the court, the ceiling.
3. Player may not hit the ball twice in a row.
4. Cannot hit the ball more than 3 times on the same side.
5. Stepping over or on the line while serving.
6. Reaching under the net and interfering with a player or the ball.
7. Touching the net.
