Additional information
This safety data sheet covers different concentrations of formaldehyde. The figure in the trade name represents the different
concentrations.

SECTION 4: First aid measures

4.1. Description of first aid measures
Formalin LM 30, 44, 51 - NL Revision Date 15-Dec-2015
___________________________________________________________________________________________

General advice First aid personnel should pay attention to their own safety. If unconscious place in
recovery position and seek medical advice. Remove/Take off immediately all
contaminated clothing. Remove breathing equipment only after contaminated clothing
have been completely removed. If breathing is irregular or stopped, administer artificial
respiration. Emergency shower and eye wash facilities must exist on work place.

Inhalation Remove to fresh air. Call a doctor or poison control centre immediately. Oxygen or
artificial respiration if needed. If unconscious place in recovery position and seek medical
advice.

Skin contact Important! Immediately flush skin with water for at least 15 minutes. Use lukewarm water
if possible. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Get medical attention
immediately. Cover wound with a sterile dressing.

Eye contact Important! Immediately flush eyes, also under eyelids, with water for at least 15 minutes.
Use lukewarm water if possible. Get medical attention immediately.

Ingestion Rinse mouth then drink plenty of water. Do NOT induce vomiting. Seek immediate
medical attention/advice.

Self-protection of the first aider

Do not breathe gas/fumes/vapour/spray. Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing. Use personal protective equipment as
required.

4.2. Most important symptoms and effects, both acute and delayed
Exposure may cause watery eyes, nausea, coughing, chest tightness, wheezing, skin rashes, allergenic reactions, and burning
sensations in the eyes, nose, and throat. Formaldehyde is corrosive on skin and may cause permanent clouding of the cornea
after only one exposure. Subsequent exposures can produce symptoms more quickly and at lower concentrations. Symptoms
of exposure may include coughing, eye or skin irritation, allergic reactions, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Formaldehyde has been
shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals and may cause cancer in humans. It is toxic if swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed
though skin or mucous membranes.

4.3. Indication of any immediate medical attention and special treatment needed
Note: Contains: =<1% Methanol

SECTION 5: Firefighting measures

5.1. Extinguishing media
Suitable extinguishing media
Carbon dioxide (CO2). Extinguishing powder. Water spray (fog).

Unsuitable extinguishing media

Do not use a solid water stream as it may scatter and spread fire.

5.2. Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture

Vapours may form explosive mixtures with air. Thermal decomposition can lead to release of irritating and toxic gases and
vapours. In the event of fire and/or explosion do not breathe fumes.

5.3. Advice for firefighters

Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and protective suit.

Additional information
Cool containers with flooding quantities of water until well after fire is out. Prevent fire extinguishing water from contaminating
surface water or the ground water system.

SECTION 6: Accidental release measures

6.1. Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures
Keep unprotected persons away. Wear full protective clothing and self contained breathing apparatus. Remove all sources of
ignition. Ensure adequate ventilation, especially in confined areas.

6.2. Environmental precautions

Do not allow into any sewer, on the ground or into any body of water. Local authorities should be advised if significant spillages
cannot be contained. See Section 12 for additional ecological information.

6.3. Methods and material for containment and cleaning up

Formalin LM 30, 44, 51 - NL Revision Date 15-Dec-2015
___________________________________________________________________________________________

Methods for containment

Prevent further leakage or spillage if safe to do so.
Small spill Dilute with water and wipe up or absorb with inert material.
Large spill Contact the rescue service.

Methods for cleaning up

Clean contaminated surface thoroughly. Flush area with flooding quantities of water.

6.4. Reference to other sections

See Section 7,8,13 for more information.

SECTION 7: Handling and storage

7.1. Precautions for safe handling
Use only with adequate ventilation and in closed systems. Obtain special instructions before use. Do not handle until all safety
precautions have been read and understood. Keep away from heat/sparks/open flames/hot surfaces. - No smoking. Not to be
used by pregnant workers and workers who have recently given birth or who are breastfeeding.

General Hygiene Considerations

When using do not eat, drink or smoke. Regular cleaning of equipment, work area and clothing is recommended.

7.2. Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities

Store in a locked area. Storage at low temperatures (below 20°C) will lead to the formation of a paraformaldehyde as a white
precipitate, and this polymerization reaction is enhanced as the temperature reduces. Storage facilities should be equipped
with ventilation at high level.

Suitable container/equipment material: Stainless steel 1.4301 (V2), High density polyethylene (HDPE), Low density
polyethylene (LDPE), Stainless steel 1.4401, aluminum.

Unsuitable container/equipment material: Paper, Board, Glass.

7.3. Specific end use(s)

For details, see the separate exposure scenario(s).
