Part 1: Course Information

Welcome to English Class! This beginner language class will give you the foundations
in grammar and vocabulary you will need to be successful in your future English
classes. We will work together to make sure you are successful. We will share our
successes as we start to learn reading, writing, and speaking skills. This course is to
help you, so please tell me if there is anything you would like to learn that will help you
in your everyday life.

This first session course will help you identify nouns, adjectives, and sentence structure.
Our goals for this session are to
● Be able to identify nouns, adjectives, and other grammar concepts
● Be able to describe ourselves and others
● Be able to give and understand directions in English
● Be able to talk about your goals and dreams
● Any goals you have I am happy to add to the course

Welcome to English class! I am your teacher Reese Spyra. I have been teaching for 4
years. I live in West Virginia where there are a lot of animals. I have a corgi named
Ronnie that is 12 years old.

I like to have a lot of fun in class, and I hope you do too. In class I make sure that you
learn so you can reach your goals. I am excited to have class with you.
Course Description
This course is designed for Beginner and Intermediate English Language Learners.
During this session, you will develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. You
will build vocabulary and understanding of grammar concepts.

Prerequisite: Students must complete required CASAS testing.

Part 2: Student Goals

Student Learning Outcomes


● Speaking: You will be able to express basic needs and can engage in social
conversations in an organized way to address the reason for communicating and
use some strategies to monitor the conversation. Conversations can include
limited descriptions, concrete terms, and more complex grammar structures
(passive voice, conditional).
● Listening: You will be able to use listening strategies when participating in a
conversation or completing a simple task and can understand learned and new
phrases in familiar context.
● Reading: You will be able to use reading strategies and context clues to
comprehend and analyze clearly organized texts and can reflect on the meaning
of the text and combine new knowledge with prior knowledge.
● Writing: You will be able to organize, convey, and revise ideas in simple
paragraphs in familiar contexts with control of basic grammar structures, spelling
and punctuation.

Course Objectives
The mission of this course is to help you to develop tools to be able to communicate in
basic English in your everyday life. In addition, all first session courses share a set of
common and interlocking goals
for students. You will:
1. expand and deepen your understanding of the local area and services available
to you
2. enhance your ability to read and think critically
3. enhance your ability to communicate effectively, in writing, speech, and via text
message
4. be able to ask for help and clarification when you need it

These goals support and complement the specific learning goals for this session.

Along with the objectives above, the you will be able to


● identify nouns, adjectives, and verbs
● describe yourself and others
● communicate using present tense and present continuous tense
● identify and use pronouns

Class Participation
Everyone should be prepared to participate in class discussions, and activities. You
may be grouped or paired with other students in the class. All interactions in class will
be civil, respectful, and supportive of an inclusive learning environment for all students.
If you or a classmate have any concerns, they may have about classroom participation
and classroom dynamics, please contact me, Reese Spyra, or Michelle W., the student
liaison. All concerns will be confidential.
If you feel shy speaking out loud or reading, please let me know. Learning a new
language can be scary, but you will be in a safe environment to take risks and make
mistakes.

Course Grading
● Attendance counts for 80% of your grade
○ You must attend a minimum of 40 class hours to be considered
eligible to move onto the next level course
○ There will be opportunities to make up missed classes
○ Life is stressful, and your teacher is happy to help you if you need it
● Homework is 20% of your grade
○ You are expected to complete all homework assignments each week
totaling 2 hours of work outside of class a week
○ Completing homework helps you learn more quickly. You are
encouraged to take more time outside of class to practice
○ If you are unable to complete the assigned homework, please contact
me. I will be happy to give you an extension to complete it.

Missed assignments and course content


● All homework assignments, in class readings, and worksheets will be
available in Google Classroom
● There are no any penalties for completion of late assignments
● You are encouraged to complete all assignments even if they are after the
assigned dates

Writing Assistance
The ESL and ABE open language lab is available to help students with extra tutoring
in English, writing and math.
