Chapter 38, Skill 38-08: Discontinuing an IV Infusion or prn Lock

1. Gathers needed supplies: alcohol wipes, sterile
2 × 2 gauze, bandage, examination gloves.
2. Follows the “Initial Implementation Steps.”
3. Washes hands; don clean gloves. Closes the
tubing clamp and turns off the IV pump.
4. Holds cannula hub securely while removing
tape from tubing and TOD.
5. Applies gentle pressure to the vein beyond the
cannula with sterile 2 × 2.
6. Gently slides cannula from the vein and slides
the 2 × 2 down to cover the site after cannula is
removed.
7. Immediately inspects tip of cannula for
intactness.
8. Holds pressure on the insertion site and cleans
area around insertion of any blood using alcohol
wipes. Maintains pressure for at least 1 minute or
longer if patient is taking anticoagulants.
9. Applies bandage and removees gloves.
Washes hands.
10. Follows “Ending Steps.”
11. Documents discontinuing IV or prn lock per
order, along with appearance of site and any
problems that occurred. Notes and documents
total IV volume infused.
