Tutorial Sheet 1
Topics Covered: Module -1
1. (a) Find a row echelon form of given matrix
 
−1 1 −1 0 3
A = −3 4 1 1 10 
4 −6 −4 −2 −14
(b) For a ∈ R, find the RREF form of the matrix
 
1 a a2
A = a 1 a.
a2 a 1
2. Solve the homogeneous system of linear equations
x+y+z+w =0
x+w =0
x + 2y + z = 0
by Gauss-Jordan method.
3. Consider the system of equations Ax = b, where A ∈ Mm×n , x ∈ Rn and b(̸= Om ) ∈ Rm . Let
u, v ∈ Rn are two solutions of this system and λ, µ ∈ R. What conditions should be imposed on λ
and µ so that λu + µv is also a solution of Ax = b? Justify.
4. For what values of a ∈ R, the following system of equations
x + 2y + z = 3
ay + 5z = 10
2x + 7y + az = b
has a unique solution. Hence, find the corresponding solution set.

5. For what value(s) of a ∈ R, the following system of equation has (i) no soluiton (ii) unique solution
or infinitely many solutions
x + 2y + z = 2
2x − 2y + 3z = 1
x + 2y − (a2 − 3)z = a
6. Find an equation relating a, b, and c so that the linear system
x + 2y − 3z = a
2x + 3y + 3z = b
5x + 9y − 6z = c
is consistent for any values of a, b and c that satisfy that equation.
7. Let x1 , x2 , . . . , xn be solutions to the system Ax = b, where A is an n × n matrix and b is a non-
zero vector in Rn . Show that, a1 x1 + a2 x2 + · · · + an xn is a solution to Ax = b if and only if
a1 + a2 + · · · + an = 1.
