inspection

The coating shall be applied after the full curing time of concrete in SAES-H-003
A1
accordance to SAES-Q-001. Sec. 8.1.4

New concrete must have a moisture content of 4% or less before the

coating applications commence.
SAES-H-003
A2
Note: Test report SATR-H-1003 " Concrete Moisture Field Test Sec. 8.1.4
(For Coating Purposes)" shall be available for review/verification of
concrete moisture condition.

Surface temperature, humidity and dew point readings shall be recorded.

SAES-H-003
A3 The substrate temperature shall be less than
Sec. 9.3.1
3°C (5°F) above the dew point prior to coating application.

Remove any protrusions and sharp edges with an abrasive

SAES-H-003
A4 carborundum brick, power grinding, or power brushing prior to coating
Sec. 7.2.1.1
concrete.

Surfaces shall be sound such that a metal object run over the concrete SAES-H-003
A5
shall not loosen any particles. Sec. 7.2.1.1

Surface contaminants such as laitance and form oils must be

removed. Form oils, grease, etc. shall be removed by steam SAES-H-003
A6
cleaning with a water emulsifying detergent added. Laitance Sec. 7.2.1.2
shall be removed by wire brushing.

Materials that cannot be removed by steam cleaning or abrasion can be

removed by Hydochloric acid etching; The adequacy of the water SAES-H-003
A7
flushing shall be checked by placing litmus paper on the wet surface to Sec. 7.2.1.3
ensure that it is fully neutralized.

New concrete shall be roughened to the texture of medium grit

A8 sandpaper by grit blasting when it has a troweled or "formed" smooth
Sec. 7.2.1.4
surface.

The tensile strength of heavy duty surface concrete by ASTM D4541

SAES-H-003
A9 shall meet or exceed 175psi for immersion service and 260 psi for
Sec. 7.2.2
industrial floors.

Remove all loose concrete, surface contaminations, sealants, and old

coatings by abrasive blasting (or other mechanical means) and/or hot SAES-H-003

water high pressure washing as appropriate, prior to making concrete Sec. 7.3.1
repairs and coating application.

Neutralize acidic surfaces with an alkaline cleaner such as soda ash SAES-H-003

Sec. 7.3.2b
at a pH of 7-8, agitating the solution during soaking.

After rinsing, force air dry surfaces for at least 24 hours prior to making SAES-H-003

any repairs to the concrete. Sec. 7.3.2b

Neutralize alkaline surfaces by steam cleaning. ASTM D4262 ---

SAES-H-003
A14 "Standard Test Method for Determining pH of Chemically Cleaned or
Sec. 7.3.2c
Etched Concrete Surfaces" shall be performed.

A strip of pH Test Paper is dipped in the rinse water remaining on the

surface. The pH reading obtained should not be more than 1.0 pH units SAES-H-003
A15
lower or 2.0 pH units higher than readings taken on the fresh water rinse Sec. 7.3.2c
before being applied to the concrete surface.

Sec. 7.4.1
applying primer/sealer to the surface.

Expansion and construction joints shall be cleaned and masked off prior SAES-H-003
B2
to coating. Sec. 7.4.3

All voids shall be prepared, primed and filled using suitable and
SAES-H-003
B3 compatible epoxy filler prior to coating. The epoxy filler materials shall be
Sec. 7.4.4
approved by the Civil and/ or the Coating engineers of the CSD.

Surfaces with sharp corners and subject to immersion conditions shall be

SAES-H-003
