being physically active.

Subject : Educating Students on Vandalism

Hi,
Lately we came across lots of news or we experience ourselves the effects of vandalism in
our community. I was discussing this issue in my class and I feel compelled to talk about my view
on this. Perhaps some feedbacks from you might be useful so we can take part in tackling this issue
at the school level.
I was driving past the my apartment in JB two weeks ago when something caught my eye.
und the few existing payphone booths in deplorable condition, due to vandalism and lack of
maintenance. Some of the booths were missing the phones or covered with advertisements while the
surrounding areas were strewn with rubbish. Although some might argue that the payphones have
lost its significance in the present day but it was still relevant to the city folk. Public payphones can
be of help in an emergency. For example, making a call urgently when phone battery is flat.
There is another problem, the graffiti. Graffiti vandalism can also make people feel unsafe. We
perceived graffiti to be a social disorder problem in their local area. Graffiti vandalism can be a
dangerous activity. Graffiti is often applied in dangerous locations, such as along train tracks, train
corridors and train tunnels.
Due to what I have seen, I brought this issue into my classroom. I talked with my students about
caring for others’ property. They need some guidance about the importance of caring for property
that belongs to another person or the public. Talk with them about what to do if they lose or damage
property that is not theirs, including replacing it or compensating the person. I ask them what they
would expect to happen if another student damaged their property.
As vandalism is related to psychosocial problem, I started to examine the student’s motivation.
Understanding why the student damaged or destroyed property may help me figure out how to keep
him from repeating the act. We must to identify the student’s motivation by observing him
carefully, taking note of what triggers the behavior. While it is important to address these
underlying concerns, this does not lessen the importance of holding the student accountable for the
vandalism.
I think those are the things that might be done at the school level. What is your thought? Do
tell. Bye.

Regards,
Izyan.
