Is Any Activity With An Observable Result

This document outlines a lesson plan on probability that includes the following: 1. The objectives are to define and illustrate experiments, outcomes, sample spaces, and events. 2. Examples of experiments are provided like flipping a coin, tossing a die, and drawing cards. The possible outcomes, events, and sample spaces are identified for each. 3. Activities are designed to have students experience experiments and practice identifying the key probability concepts. Guided questions help students analyze the activities in terms of experiments, outcomes, sample spaces, and events.

Lesson Plan in Mathematics 8

Introduction to Probability

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of this session, the students should be able to:
1. Define experiment, outcome, sample space and event
2. Illustrate experiment, outcome, sample space and event
3. Relate experiment, outcome, sample space and event
II. SUBJECT MATTER
Topic: Illustrate an experiment, outcome, sample space and event
Reference: Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 8 Region V-Bicol; Mathematics 8
Learner’s Material

Materials:
PowerPoint Presentation, Dice, Coin, Deck of Cards
III. PROCEDURE

Prelimiinary Activities
a. Routine Activity
b. Unlocking of Difficulties
Vocabulary Word/s
1. certainty – refers to an event that would happen.
2. Experiment - is any activity with an observable result.
3. Sample Space - The set of all possible outcomes or sample points of an experiment.
4. Event - An EVENT is a subset of the sample space.

c. Activity/ies

1.
Direction:
a. Each student will be given 10 tickets in the beginning of the game.
b. This game is played by rolling two dice. The sum of the two dice is the result. Place
the ticket/s on numbers 1-12 on the number board. If your guess is correct, you get
double the tickets.
c. Each ticket is equivalent to 2 candies. The more tickets you have, the more prices
you get.

3. FLIP A COIN

d. Analysis

1. Guide Question
1. How do you decide on choosing the number?

2.
1. What do you call the first activity you have performed? (Experiment)
2. When you tossed a die, what comes out? (Outcome: 1,2,3,4,5, or 6)
3. How do you illustrate the results? (Getting an odd or getting an even)
4. What do you call those results of tossing a die? (Sample Space)
5. What do you call the second activity you have performed? (Experiment)
6. When you flipped a coin, what comes out? (Outcome: Head or Tail)
7. How do you illustrate the results? (Getting head or getting tail)
8. What do you call those results of flipping a coin? (Sample Space)

e. Abstraction
The activities that you performed are examples of experiment. An
EXPERIMENT is any activity with an observable result. It can be in the form of
making observations or taking measurements.
An OUTCOME is the result of an experiment. The set of all possible
outcomes or sample points of an experiment is called the SAMPLE SPACE.
SAMPLE POINT is an individual outcome in the sample space.
An EVENT is a subset of the sample space.
Example: Determine the possible outcomes, sample space, and an event of the
following experiments.

1. Flipping a coin and tossing a die.

2. Drawing a card from a deck of cards.
3. Spinning a colored wheel.

and tossing a die. and an even H5, H6, T1, T2,
number T3, T4, T5, T6
2.Drawing a card Clubs: A, 2, 3, 4, Drawing a black Club King Hearts: A, 2, 3, 4,

f. Application
1. Taking a multiple-choice test.
Event: answering letter a
Sample space: a, b, c, and d.
2. Shooting a basketball.
Event: Get in
Sample space: Get In and Not getting in

IV. EVALUATION

Tell the word being describe by each statement. Choose your answer from the
box below.

SAMPLE SPACE

1. The set of possible outcomes.

2. Result of an experiment.
3. Any subset of a sample space.
4. A process that has a number of distinct possible outcomes in which the result
cannot be predicted with certainty.
