Module 2: Solving Quadratic Equations by Extracting the Square Roots and Factoring
Some Quadratic Equations do not contain a First degree term in the variable.
They are in the form of ax² + c = 0, where c ≠ 0 . In this case, b = 0. Equations of this
type can be solved by the method Extracting the Square Roots.
Another method of solving quadratic equation is by factoring. It is necessary to
recall factoring polynomials which they already studied in Grade 8 mathematics .
Think of this important question as you go through this lessons: How does
finding solutions of quadratic equation facilitate in solving real-life problems and in
making decisions?
What I know
Let’s find out how much you know about this topic. On a separate sheet, write
only the letter that you think best answers the questions below. Answer all items and
take note of those items that you were not able to solve correctly and try to look for
the correct answer as you go through this module.

TASK # 1:
Solve the following quadratic equations by extracting the square roots.
1. x² - 16 – 0
2. x² = 0
3. x² + 4 = 0
4. (x-4)² - 25 = 0
TASK # 2:

Module 2: Solving Quadratic Equations by Extracting the Square Roots and Factoring
Example 1. Find the solutions or the roots of the equation x² - 16 = 0 by extracting the
square roots.
Since 16 is greater than 0 , then the 1st property above can be applied to find
the values of x that will make the equation x² - 16 = 0 true.
x² = 16 x = ± √16
x=±4
To check, substitute the values of the original equation
.
For x = 4 : For x = -4
x² - 16 = 0 x² - 16 = 0
( 4)² - 16 ? 0 (-4 )² - 16 ? 0
16 –16 ? 0 16 - 16 ? 0
0 = 0 0= 0
Both values satisfy the given equation. So the equation x² - 16 = 0 is true when
x = 4 and x = -4
Solution: x=0
To check: x² = 0
(0) ² ? 0
0=0
Since -4 is less than 0, then the equation x ² = - 4 has no real root / no solution

Module 2: Solving Quadratic Equations by Extracting the Square Roots and Factoring
For x = 9 For x = -1
x = +9
(x – 4) ² -25 = 0 (x– 4) ² - 25 = 0
(9 – 4) ² -25 ? 0 (-1– 4) ² - 25 ? 0
(5)² - 25 ? 0 ( -5) ² - 25 ? 0
25 – 25 ? 0 25 – 25 ? 0
0=0 0=0
Both values of x satisfy the given equation. So, the equation (x-4) ² - 25 = 0 is
true when x = + 9 or when x = -1.
Grade 9 Mathematics 5
Module 2: Solving Quadratic Equations by Extracting the Square Roots and Factoring
For x = 0 : For x = - 9 :
( 0)² = - 9(0) (-9)² = - 9 (-9)
0=0 81 = 81

Module 2: Solving Quadratic Equations by Extracting the Square Roots and Factoring
Checking: h² - 144 = 0
( -12) ²-144 = 0 (12) ² - 144 = 0
144 – 144 = 0 144 – 144 = 0
0=0 0=0
Both values of x satisfy the given equation. So the the equation h² - 144 = 0 is
true when x = ± 7.
