Message to the Learner and Facilitator

For the Learner:

This Self Learning Kit (SLK) is designed to provide you knowledge based on actual
learning experiences. This aims to monitor your own learning at your own schedule wherein
you can study and decide the importance of the information found in this module. Here you
will gain knowledge on how to solve quadratic equations since you already successfully
illustrated quadratic equation in the previous module. In this module you will learn the four
ways in solving quadratic equations namely, (a) extracting square roots, (b) factoring, (c)
completing the square and (d) using the quadratic formula. But off course, we are going to
do this systematically. Now, we shall continue with the two remaining methods. Please follow
the instructions carefully. Just take your time and enjoy as you answer the exercises and
always remember again that math does not make simple things complicated but makes
complicated things simple.

For the Facilitator:

Please make a follow up whether your son/daughter is following the instructions
written in this module and guide them on how to answer the exercises provided. Make sure
your son/daughter answer the exercises as honestly as possible. Feel free to contact me
through text or chat if you have some questions about this SLK.

What’s New

Let us take a look on the following equations .

1. 2x²- 3x = 7 3. x²- 6x + 9= 0
2. 5x² -10x – 2 =0 4. 3x² + 8x + 5= 0 5. x² + x = 15

Which of the quadratic equations you think is a perfect square? Why?

Among the 5 equations, which are factorable into two binomials? Which are NOT?
How will you solve quadratic equations which are not factorable?

If the quadratic equation 𝑎𝑥2+𝑏𝑥+𝑐=0 is NOT factorable into two binomials, roots can
be derived by using completing the square method. This process involves getting the 3rd
term of the perfect square trinomial by squaring the half of the coefficient of the middle term,
𝒃 𝒃
𝑏𝑥, in symbols, 𝒂𝒙2+𝒃𝒙+( )2 =−𝒄+( )2
𝟐 𝟐

Completing the Square Method when 𝒂=𝟏

2
If 𝑎𝑥 +𝑏𝑥+𝑐=0 is not factorable whose 𝑎=1, we do the following:
1. transfer the 3rd term to the other side of the equation and add 3rd term of
the Perfect Square Trinomial on both sides of the equation;
2. factor the Perfect Square Trinomial on the left and add the values on the
right side;
3. extract the root of both sides of the equation;
4. determine the roots by combining the numbers in the equation.

For example: 1. Solve x2 – 6x + 7 = 0 by completing the square method.

Solution: x2 – 6x + 7 = 0
−6 −6
Step 1 → x2 – 6x + ( )2 = - 7 + ( )2
2 2
x2 – 6x + (-3)2 = - 7 + (−3 )2
x2 – 6x + 9 = - 7 + 9
Step 2 → (x-3)(x-3) = 2
Step 3 → √(x-3)2 = √2
Step 4 → x – 3 = ± √2
x = 3 ± √2
Therefore the roots are 3+ √2 and 3 - √2

Another comfortable way of getting the roots of the quadratic equation is to use the
quadratic formula, in symbols,

To use this formula, follow these simple steps in solving the roots of quadratic
equations:
Step 1: identify a, b, and c and plug them into the quadratic formula.
Step 2: proceed with simplify the radicand, if you can.
Step 3: determine the roots by combining the numbers in the equation
Example 2. Solve: by using the quadratic formula.

Step 1: Identify a, b, and c and plug

them into the quadratic formula. In this
case a = 1, b = –8, and c = 14.

Step 2: Use the order of operations to

simplify the radicand.

Step 3: Determine the roots by

combining the numbers in the
equation.
In this case you can simply the radical
into:

x1=4 + √2
Therefore the roots are :
and x2= 4 - √2

What Is It
1. How to solve quadratic equations using Completing the Square Method? Are
there steps to solve it?
2. Do you agree that any quadratic equation can be solved using Quadratic
Formula? Why?

Mini-Lesson
So, let us recall how to solve quadratic equations by completing the square method.
If the quadratic equation 𝑎𝑥2+𝑏𝑥+𝑐=0 is NOT factorable into two binomials, roots can
be determine by using :

A. Completing the square method.

If 𝑎=1, follow these simple steps:
1. Transfer the 3rd term to the other side of the equation and add 3rd term of
the Perfect Square Trinomial on both sides of the equation;

2. Factor the Perfect Square Trinomial on the left and add the values on the
right side;

SCHOOLS DIVISION OF TOLEDO CITY

3. Extract the root of both sides of the equation;

4. Determine the roots by combining the numbers in the equation.

Example: 1. Solve x² + x = 15 by completing the square.

Solution: x2 + 2x = 15
2 2
Step 1 → x2 + 2x + ( )2 = 15 + ( )2
2 2
x2 + 2x + 1 = 15 + 1
Step 2 → (x+1)(x+1) = 16
Step 3 → √(x+1)2 = √16
Step 4 → x+1 =±4
x = -1 ± 4
x1 = -1+4 ; x2 = -1 – 4
x1 = 3 ; x2 = -5
Therefore the roots are 3 and - 5.

B. Quadratic Formula

Using the Quadratic Formula in solving quadratic equations simply do the following:

Step 1: Identify a, b, and c and plug them into the quadratic formula.
Step 2: Proceed with simplify the radicand, if you can.
Step 3: Determine the roots by combining the numbers in the equation

Example: 1. Solve 3x2 =15- 14x by using the quadratic formula.

Solution: 3x2 +14x = 15 →Writing the equation in standard form

a=3 ; b=14 ; c= 15 →Identifying the values of a, b, and c.
Using x = -b ±√b2-4ac .
