LESSON PROPER

What is Panel Discussion?

The panel discussion consists of a few subject matter experts gather on stage or in front of
the camera to discuss a specific topic and offer differing perspectives. The panelists share
facts or personal experiences, express opinions, and answer audience questions.

English Grade 7
A Panel Discussion should:

 Be thought-provoking and insightful

 Present diverse perspectives on an issue
 Educate, inspire, and spark the audience’s curiosity

A Panel Discussion should not be:

 A series of presentations by the panelists

 Just a Q&A session with the audience
 A repetition of the same points from different panelists

Examples of Panel Discussion:

Talk show Format- A group of nutrition experts gather around to talk about continuous
malnutrition across the country.

Debate Format- A group of Politicians having a discussion about their supposed platforms.

Game Show Format- Each panelist would be required to answer specific questions related to
their fields, and those who gave the best answers (as voted by the audience) would go onto
the next round. Those who didn’t were banished.

HOW TO ORGANIZE A PANEL DISCUSSION

1. Choose a moderator who has done this before.

2. Select your panelist carefully.
3. Stick to a theme and plan questions in advance.
4. Allow your panelists to pre-mingle, but don’t overdo it.
5. Keep introduction short.
6. Give the audience a chance to participate.
7. Consider a one-sheeter of key takeaways.

PUBLIC FORUM

 A situation in which people may discuss about an issue or a topic of public interest. It
is where the people are free to express their thoughts and ideas.
 The audience in this gathering will take part in the conversation about a specific
subject or issue.
 Give people of diverse backgrounds a chance to express their views
 Are a first step toward understanding the community's needs and resources

Why do we conduct Public Forums?

 They can offer valuable insights into the community

 They can help link your group with people who are able and willing to help
 They can provide various feedback from different kinds of people.

English Grade 7
How should you organize a public forum?

 Hold meetings at different sites to get real representation.

 Schedule the forum at an easy-to-find, public location which is accessible and
comfortable - for example, a library, school or church.
 If possible, hold the forum in the evening to avoid time conflicts with work and
school.
 Publicize the forum as widely as possible. Fliers, advertisements, public service
announcements and press releases can all be used. Make sure the date, time, location
and purpose of the meeting are included.
 Personally recruit community leaders and diverse community members to attend the
meetings. Ask them to recruit others as well.
 Serve light refreshments if possible. They encourage mingling and set a friendly tone.
