A SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN READING AND WRITING SKILLS

CONTENT STANDARD: The understands the relationship of a written text and the context
in which it was developed.
PERFORMANCE STANDARD: The learner writes a 1000-word critique of a selected text on
the basis of its claim/s, context, and properties as a written material.
LEARNING COMPETENC/MELC: Explain critical reading as a form of reasoning

Objectives
At the end of the lesson the students are expected to:
a. define critical reading;
b. determine the importance of critical reading in personal and academic life;
and
c. apply critical reading strategy in personal and academic life.

I. Subject Matter
a. Topic: Critical Reading as Reasoning
b. Materials: visual aids, cartolina strips, Laptop, and Powerpoint Presentation
c. References: (Alhaida H. Sarahan) 2021, Quarter 3. Module 7
II. Procedures
a. Preparation

4. Review on previous lesson
5. Presentation of lesson objectives

b. Motivation
Task 1:“I CAN REASON!”
1. Give instruction for the task. Direction: Test students reasoning skills.
“A murderer is condemned to death. He has to choose among three
rooms. The first is full of raging fires, the second is full of assassins with
loaded guns and the third is full of lions that haven’t eaten in three years.
Which room is safest for him?”
2. Call randomly five volunteers from the class.

c. ACTIVITY
Task 2. Group Activity- “Read, Reflect and Critic”
1. Divide the class into three.
2. Directions: Identify the critical reading strategy being used in each of the
following and support your answer.
3. Give rubrics for scoring.
d. ANALYSIS
Process the previous activity.
1. Ask: How do you define a critical reader? What are his/her qualities?
2. Define with the students what critical reading is and discuss the critical
reading strategies.
3. Check the groups’ answer on Task 2 and discuss the right answers with
students.
e. ABSTRACTION Task 3. Pair Activity “I am Important”
Recap with a twist. Direction: Each pair will determine the importance of
critical reading in their personal and academic life by giving specific situation
based on their own experiences.
f. APPLICATION
Task 4. Group Activity “We Are Critical Readers!”
Direction: With the same group on Task 2, choose situation that the
importance of critical reading in your personal and academic life can be
applied.
1. Each group will pick one specific task to perform (roleplay, poem, song,
slogan, etc).
2. Each group will explain how important critical reading is through their
chosen task.
3. Provide criteria for grading.
4. Give students five minutes to prepare then have them present their
outputs.

Direction: Identify the critical reading strategy being used in each of the following.

______1. As a reader, you have to be suspicious and be cautious when the writer
uses emotionally loaded words, writes very harsh and abusive things about or
against someone or something or maligns or insults another.
______2. Some writers present opposing issues or hints and these are what a critical
reader or thinker may use in his or her analysis of the text.
______3. The critical reader is able to get clues which will help him interpret the
work, and understand the how’s and why’s that made the author write the text.
______4. The critical thinker checks if the writer is building a common ground with
the readers, or if s/he is basing his or her reasoning on shared beliefs.
______5. This entails the reactions or emotions that you are made to feel by the
author when you read his or her work is a good example of an occasion where you
can be able to use this strategy.
