Blinded by the Lights.

As we enter an era of being confined in four walls as a result of the pandemic, we have
no choice but to stare at displays and utilize our cellphones and other forms of
technology to keep us occupied. Internet, cellphones, computers, artificial intelligence
through our phones, virtual realities, consoles, you name it, and I am sure we have all
used it. Assuming boredom is the reason for using technologies due to the pandemic, is
it really a good thing to do? Or a bad way to go?

According to Gomez (2021), the world's smartphone users number over 3.8 billion.
Those who use smartphones now receive 427 percent more messages and notifications
than those who used smartphones a decade ago. In addition, they send 278 percent
more texts. The use of phones appears to be a natural necessity for modern living, yet it
can also create alarm and have harmful implications. Searches for "mobile phone
addiction" have been on the rise since 2004, according to Google Trends. Technology is
being used all over the world, especially in these years as people are unable to go out
and socialize physically. Everything is possible with technology, including
communication, bank transactions, shopping online, accessing news at any time and
from any location, and even education. Hence the reason for using technologies on a
daily basis.

Nothing but ease of doing things have been brought to us by technology. Nonetheless,
technology still has a negative impact on our well-being. As stated by Cohut (2018), eye
strain and difficulties focusing on crucial tasks may be caused by social media and
mobile devices, which can lead to psychological and physical problems. They may also
play a role in more significant health issues including depression. Overuse of
technology may have a greater impact on children and teenagers who are still
developing. With the use of technology, social media come into place. We tend to meet
new people through social media, and some of us become insecure about ourselves,
especially since many people on social media meet the society's standards.
Furthermore, social media can lead a person to believe that something is correct even
when it is not. Many people easily believe in fake news and incorrect information
presented in the media, and some children without proper guidance in using
technologies and social media are exposed to illegal and inappropriate materials that
are not appropriate for their age.

There is no doubt that technology is the best thing that has ever happened to human
society. However, misuse of technology or the internet, on the other hand, is a
potentially disastrous scenario.

Adults and children of all ages use technology, and we use it from the moment we wake
up until we go to sleep. It appears that our lives have become so focused on technology
that we have lost sight of what is right in front of us. Honestly speaking, I am not an
exception. When I sit in front of my computer, I tend to completely ignore anyone's
presence. I did not expect to be affected by this pandemic, none of us did either. Even
so, I would not have become addicted to technology if the pandemic had not occurred. I
cannot, however, blame technology. Some may disagree, but technology is one of the
things that keeps me going. Friendships made through gaming, virtual lessons learned
from my teacher, other experiences, and computer knowledge gained that I will be able
to use in the future as technology advances.

However, technology should not be where our world revolves. There are more things to
pay attention to rather than technology. We should try and see things from different
perspectives. This could help us in trying new things that we may not have attempted in
the first place because we are contented and somewhat satisfied with what we are
currently doing such as scrolling through social media and learning a lot about
technologies. Yes, technology is now a part of our lives as a result of globalization,
nevertheless, it is important for us to limit our use of it as part of our human
development. Other activities, such as learning new hobbies and spending time with our
loved ones, must be practiced. Let us focus more on the brighter side of life rather than
the bright side of lights. As Christian Lous Lange stated, “Technology is a useful servant
but a dangerous master.”
